Charlatans UK Sign to Sanctuary Records

James Gregory reports:
One of the mid-90s most resilient British pop bands, the Charlatans (or the Charlatans UK, for those who also prefer to say the London Suede or the Verve), are back in the news-- the group recently announced a label shift from Universal Island to Sanctuary. The band signed the deal at the close of 2004, which gives the label rights to at least one album, with the option of two more thereafter. Sanctuary, a new indie Mecca of sorts, also currently boasts impressive releases from Morrissey, Spiritualized, Belle & Sebastian, Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, and British Sea Power.

The band's official website has already announced plans for the Charlatans debut for Sanctuary. According to a post on the site, the Manchester rockers are in the early stages of production on the as-yet untitled disc, and have already held sessions across the UK and North America. While it's still too early for a firm release date, a single is expected for a radio release in the summer of 2005, with the full album likely to hit stores towards the end of the year. The record will be the band's ninth studio album, and their first release since 2004's Up At the Lake.

In other Charlatans news, vocalist Tim Burgess and drummer Jon Brookes are featured guests on the latest Chemical Brothers album Push the Button, which sees a stateside release on January 24. The two are featured separately on a pair of tracks, with Burgess lending vocals to "The Boxer", and Brookes playing drums on "Hold Tight London".
