Thrill Jockey DVD out next week

On February 22, Thrill Jockey will release a DVD entitled Looking For A Thrill, the three-year brainchild of the label’s tireless owner Bettina Richards. The premise: a collection interviews from independent music’s finest about defining musical moments in their lives. This could entail anything from the artist’s first great show, to an album of great personal importance, or more abstract ideas and concepts that helped inspire the interviewees to pick up and instrument and make music.

With such a simple, vague yet fascinating approach to the music DVD, it’s incredible that more films like this haven’t been conceived in the past. The novelty of its design is apparent in the great outpouring of participation from artists who chose to contribute to the film. Such notables as Björk, Mike Watt, Ian MacKaye (Fugazi), Jimmy Martin, Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth), Vic Chestnutt, Yo La Tengo, Tortoise, Steve Albini (Big Black), Mouse on Mars, Jon Spencer, Boredoms, the Sea and Cake, Slint, Mekons, and Calexico, and members of The Jesus Lizard offered to speak. It wouldn’t be surprising if such a mix of influential minds didn’t help inspire one another in some way or another.

All profits from Looking For A Thrill will go to the environmentalist group, Greenpeace. Pre orders are currently being received at Thrill Jockey’s official website.
