Edwyn Collins Hospitalized, Seriously Ill

Former Orange Juice leader Edwyn Collins is in a British hospital after suffering a cerebral haemorrhage on Sunday night. According to the singer and guitarist's management, "doctors are trying to stabilize his condition". Collins' wife, Grace, posted on his website's message board that: "He is being well looked after in hospital. When there is more to report, I'll let you all know."

Collins is best-known in the U.S. and elsewhere for his mid-90s hit "A Girl Like You", but with his landmark group Orange Juice he was a central figure in the development of indie pop and indie rock. Collins formed Orange Juice (née the Nu-Sonics) in Glasgow in 1976, and the band's self-deprecating lyrics and acerbic wit made them one of the most endearing guitar pop bands of the early 1980s. Along with Josef K, the Fire Engines, and Aztec Camera, Orange Juice crafted what their first label, Postcard, called "The Sound of Young Scotland"-- which in their case was a mix of Velvets-y jangle, Chic-informed rhythm, and fey vocals.

Domino Records is compiling Orange Juice's early singles and radio sessions, and the "first draft" of their debut album-- recordings originally released on the long out-of-print Ostrich Churchyard and The Heather's on Fire-- into one package entitled The Glasgow School, which is slated for release in May.
