Crowded House's Paul Hester Dies

According to numerous Australian press reports, former Split Enz and Crowded House drummer Paul Hester was found dead Saturday in a Melbourne park, victim of an apparent suicide by hanging at age 46. The Sydney Morning Herald reports that despite Hester's jocular, Ringo-esque persona, he fought a lifelong battle against depression, leaving Crowded House in 1994 in frustration over the band's career. Hester went on to host several shows on Australian TV. He leaves behind two daughters, aged 5 and 10, by photographer Mardi Somerfeld.

The Herald further reports that bandmates and friends Neil and Tim Finn did not cancel their Monday night performance at the Royal Albert Hall in London, as had been considered. Instead, they were joined there by Crowded House bassist Nick Seymour for a tribute to Hester.
