Jack White Weds Model Karen Elson

Rock'n'roll can be pretty powerful, and though we at Pitchfork know very little about relationships beyond what we've learned from Darkness records, we hear true love is serious stuff as well. It was news to us, though, that the combination of romance and the devil's music could actually warp time and alter the past. But so it can!

Jack White got married last week in Brazil to model Karen Elson at (we're quoting the White Strips website now) "the exact point where the three rivers [the Rio Negro, the Salimones, and the Amazon] meet." A "traditional Shaman priest" performed the ceremony in a canoe, followed by a priestly benediction at a Catholic cathedral in the city of Manaus. The tricky thing is, the online announcement added, "This was the first marriage for both newlyweds," even though, as far as we knew, Jack White got married in 1996 to Meg White. You know, that woman from the White Stripes.

This has all led some to speculate that the wedding might be a sham intended to draw publicity, but in an interview with The Canadian Press this weekend, White said that was basically the exact opposite of how he wanted to live his life: "I despise celebrity, I think it's ridiculous...it's so disgusting to me. When you see things in your private life torn apart it just makes you really sad-- not sad for Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson, they want it, they have no right to complain because they've asked for it completely. I never asked for it, all I've wanted to do is write songs."

The two apparently met just over a month ago on the set of the White Stripes' video shoot for "Blue Orchid". The best man and maid of honor at the wedding were band manager Ian Montone and Ms. Meg White, respectively.
