Depeche Mode to Break Four-Year Silence With New LP

Greatest hits comps and remix albums will only take your career so far. And while they're not exactly spring chickens anymore, Depeche Mode are not dinosaurs, either. Four years on from their last record of original material, 2001's Exciter, they are in the studio working on a new, currently untitled album with a tentative release date of October.

Singer Dave Gahan released a solo album in 2003, Paper Monsters, and relations within the band grew uneasy. In an interview with Q magazine, Gahan says, "The strangest thing that's happened is that we're all getting on pretty well. With the last album, it all felt a bit dead. This time we're all pulling together a lot more."

Plugging away at Sound Design Studios in Santa Barbara, Calif., the band is using some of Gahan's songs for the first time. "There's a new drive within Depeche Mode. It's called competition," Gahan says with a hint of sarcasm.

The band believe this new album is up there with their darkest work. This seems likely with song titles such as "Pain", "Suffer Well", and "Sinner in Me". But before anything is finalized, the band will pack up and head to New York to work on the remainder of the album. "We're ready to make a move," Gahan says. "There's only so much sun you can take when you're singing songs about suffering and pain."
