Zooma Tour Canceled. Bummer.

Joel Ebner:
At this point, it seems fair to suggest that the days of the traveling rock circus are over. After a solid eight seasons as a touring showcase, Lollapalooza finally collapsed under the weight of its own ambition last year, only to be resurrected this season as a stationary festival in Chicago. Now, according to concert organizers, the Trey Anastasio and Ben Harper-headlined Zooma Tour has been canceled, due to poor reception.

Say what you like about those patchouli-wearing gremlins who give the jamband set a bad name, but this this lineup had its high points; over the course of the six-week tour (which was supposed to have started next week), a rotating schedule of artists were to have included the Black Keys, Gomez, and Jurassic 5. Ticket sales, however, "weren't what anyone expected," said producer Jonathan Mayers in an interview with Billboard.com. By comparison, Bonnaroo (which is organized by the same producers) has held the highest-grossing American festival for three years straight, despite its landlocked position in the middle of Tennessee. In other words, waiting for the carnival to come to town is passˇ-- people really do want to travel 300 miles to set up camp next to that guy selling grilled cheese sandwiches out of his Winnebago for a living.

By the by, did we mention that Pitchfork is curating a festival this summer? Viva Intonation!
