De La Soul, MF Doom, and the Roots Hook Up

You think 50 Cent's got thick skin? Well, he ain't no embattled/endangered rhino, nor is he one of the rappers tough enough to help save several species of African rhinos at hip-hop fashion mogul Mark Ecko's Save the Rhinos benefit concert on June 28. At this point, the Roots, MF Doom, De La Soul, and DJ Premier have all signed on for the show, which will be held in NYC's Central Park. It's such a worthy cause, in fact, that other surprise guests are expected to perform as well, though for all we know that could just mean Inspectah Deck doing card tricks. D-Stroy, former member of the Arsonists, will host the whole affair.

In case you're wondering, the impetus behind all this philanthropy is Ecko's business Ecko Unlimited and its rhino-silhouette logo. According to SOHH.com, Ecko recently stated, "While the rhino has been an integral part of Ecko Unlimited's heritage since its beginning 12 years ago, it wasn't until we really studied this majestic animal and its daily struggles that a true affinity was born." Proceeds from the benefit will go to the International Rhino Foundation to fund its efforts in doubling the populations of Indian, Black, and Sumatran rhinos. Ecko Unlimited's website states that the rhino fit well as the company's logo because "it's a big, clumsy animal, but when it runs, it's very nimble." The same could be said for Doom, except that it would read "he's a big, clumsy weed-smoker, but when he flows, he wears a metal face-mask." A nice fit all around, as befits a fashion designer-curated benefit concert.
