Beck, Stereolab Lend Hand to Autism Benefit Comp

You used to see examples all the time at thrift stores and garage sales; now you see them on eBay-- 60s leftovers with wild cover art on the outside, esoteric and loopy sounds on the inside. Sometimes these were the mad creations of Bruce Haack and Esther Nelson, whose pioneering electronic children's albums have been dissected, covered and remixed by some of today's brightest musical lights for Dimension Mix, to be released on August 23. Not only will the album contain some choice acts letting loose on tracks like "Army Ants in Your Pants", "School 4 Robots", and "Jelly Dancers", but some proceeds of the album will go to benefit the Cure Autism Now Foundation, one of the leaders in the ongoing fight to, uh, do what their name says.

Haack's genre-jumping arrangements on records like Ebenezer Electric, Funky Doodle, Dance Sing and Listen Again and Again, Captain Entropy and The Way Out Record for Children are (not surprisingly) already prized by electro and hip hop DJs, vinyl junkies, and analog synth gadgeteers. But the records were originally made for kids, so hopefully Beck, Stereolab, Eels, Apples in Stereo, Money Mark, Fantastic Plastic Machine, Danielson Famile, and past Haack collaborator Chris Kachulis (among others) will bring back some of the experimental/innocent quality of these recordings-- or at least enable us reminisce back to a time before designer stubble, crunk, and "young Hollywood" ruled the world.
