Ex-Delgado Emma Pollack Signs to 4AD

Those still in a funk about the April break-up of Scottish indie pop heroes the Delgados can at least take comfort in a couple of things: The band has promised to continue operating its influential Glasgow label Chemikal Underground, and the band's members are rumored to be working on new projects since the split. Concerning the latter, the rumor is fact for singer-guitarist Emma Pollack, who has signed to 4AD Records and will release a solo album within the next year or so.

Despite receiving plenty of critical adoration throughout their five-album career, including a Mercury Prize Nomination for 2000's The Great Eastern, the Delgados never seemed to break though into the commercial sphere enjoyed by likeminded bands such as Belle & Sebastian and Mogwai. A large part of the band's appeal centered around singers Pollack and Alun Woodward, whose intertwining vocals we will miss no matter how well these new projects turn out. Pollack will use this year to ready songs for her solo debut, which will most likely be released at the beginning of 2006 by 4AD, the British label famous for its ethereal, atmospheric aesthetic (see also: Cocteau Twins, Pale Saints, His Name Is Alive), as well as for totally ignoring its own aesthetic and signing the Pixies.
