Spiritualized's Jason Pierce Recovering From Illness

NME reports that Spiritualized leader Jason Pierce is convalescing from a recent illness that landed the singer in hospital wards over the past few weeks. Spiritualized's official site offered fans concrete medical details: "As rumored on the forums both here and at NME.com, J. Spaceman was recently taken critically ill but has been allowed home after a prolonged stay in intensive care and critical care. Jason contracted advanced periorbital cellulitis with bilateral pneumonia with rapid deterioration requiring intensive care and c-pap for type 1 respiratory failure."

Haven't completed your residency program at Johns Hopkins yet? Well, in short, it seems that the Spaceman had a bacterial infection centered around the soft tissue surrounding the eye that is more prevalent among children and which is normally caused by a contagion spread from the membrane covering the eye (like pink eye does) or from the nose or throat. This condition, coupled with the pneumonia in both lungs, caused rapid respiratory failures that required emergency treatment.

Earlier reports were a little more alarming. Spaceman's partner Juliette had posted to the band's message board: "So nearly dying twice in the last two-and-a-half weeks Jason has now and fantastically made an alarming and brilliant recovery and is due home today. He is still fragile and really weak, weighing in at maybe 8 stone but love and happiness on his side. Weirdly he is still Jason though. No thoughts about how lucky he is just mentioned how mad it is that his record is written almost like he was ill before. Not that he's into esp and stuff just in the most beautiful way." Additionally, Marc Marot, who handles Spiritualized's management, sent a email to MTV.com, claiming that "it was, at best, touch-and-go for some time. The medical team at the Royal London Hospital twice revived him during the course of his intensive treatment." It's wonderful to hear that one of Pitchfork's favorite artists is back on the road to recovery after what must have been a horribly painful and frightening period.

The founding member of pioneering fuzz and drone outfit Spaceman 3 (along with Pete "Sonic Boom" Kember) has completed recording the sixth Spiritualized studio album, which, barring any unforeseen circumstances, should see the light of day next year through Sanctuary. This upcoming recording will mark the first Spiritualized LP since 2003's sub-par Amazing Grace. Get well soon Spaceman.
