Deerhoof to Play with the Roots, Tour
At first glance, most wouldn't think that organic Philly hip-hop crew the Roots and Bay Area experimental pop freakazoids Deerhoof would make the most compatible of dance partners. (Sample Roots lyric: "Yo, I walk across this world that's deceptive/ Beats are perfected/ The ghetto's infested/ With more destruction/ My vocal eruption/ Was speakin' 'bout corruption / With no introduction." Sample Deerhoof lyric: "Panda! Panda! Panda! Panda!") But something inspired ?uestlove and co. to invite da Hoof, along with TV on the Radio, to open their Illadelph hometown show on September 16 at the ritzy Verizon Theatre at the Kimmel Centre for the Performing Arts. (Tickets go on sale on August 15.)
Sure, it's a little mind-boggling: The Roots, TV on the Radio, and Deerhoof performing together on the same stage that the Philadelphia Orchestra calls home. But if you think about it, all three bands take a left-of-center approach to making music, and they're all killer live acts who have cultivated a fan base mostly through touring. Plus, critics love 'em. So maybe opposites attract because we're all the same deep down inside?
Enough with the Mr. Rogers-isms, we've got tour dates to report! The show in Philadelphia will be one of the first of Deerhoof's fall outing in support of their upcoming album, The Runners Four, due to be released on October 11 by Kill Rock Stars/5RC. Certain Pitchfork staffers can be found lying on their backs, tongues lolling out of their mouths, if anybody even says the word "runners" nowadays.
Here's the schedule for the tour, obviously with plenty of gaps to be filled:
