Pitchfork: Sunburned Hand of the Man to Tour

Some things you might witness at a Sunburned Hand of the Man show: dancing skeletons, cross-legged clarinet-playing tramps, flamingoes and foliage, someone carrying a large stick, souls descending into the underworld, masks and bandanas, and people in varying degrees of trance-like states of consciousness. As necromantic as this sounds, it's not all about exploring the inner landscape and achieving samadhi-- there's also the awesome sounds of the band's Captain Beefheart-meets-Can "free folk" to worship. Basically, it's your everyday fiendish fiesta of symphonic and shamanic excess. Plus, if we didn't already mention it, there's a guy with a stick.

The collective that was culled out of Shit Spangled Banner's demise will begin their "Fall Brawl" tour in Buffalo on August 16, flying the freak flag throughout the U.S. for a month of dates. Sunburned Hand of the Man will be bringing along Louisville "free rock" power trio the Magik Markers on all dates, including the ArthurFest in L.A., where both acts are slotted to play sets.

Much has been made lately of a certain Sufjan Stevens' (who's he?) goal to write 50 full-length commemorative albums for the U.S. states. Less known is Sunburned Hand of the Man's alleged off-the-cuff pledge to record and issue 50 different releases, perhaps because Sunburned Hand have no theme. They're doing a much more convincing job of actually getting there, though-- Mr. Stevens tends to work somewhat deliberately, while Sunburned Hand of the Man are barnstorming through records, already nearing the halfway mark. According to the band's site, this year alone has welcomed the album Zample and will soon see the releases of a new double album, Wedlock, and another single record, Complexion. But while SHotM are remarkably prolific at recording, extensive tours are rare. So try to catch one of these dates below or prepare to be banished into a sphere of stick-free normalcy evermore! Additional dates and some venue details should be announced shortly, but below are the dates so far. All dates feature the Magik Markers as support.
