Yo La Tengo, Tom Waits Rock for Katrina Relief

Our eyes are still glazed over from all those telethons last weekend, but the Hurricane Katrina benefits keep coming, as they should. Seriously, if you're a Big Famous Musician and you haven't joined the relief effort yet, what the hell is your problem? (Yeah, Springsteen, I'm talking to you.) Even Tom Waits is crawling out of his cave for this.

Here's the latest round-up of musician responses to the devastation of the Gulf Coast:

* New York City will host a gaggle of benefit concerts in the coming weeks.
This Sunday, September 18, Ryan Adams & the Cardinals, Ted Leo & Pharmacists, Jesse Malin, Debbie Harry, Joseph Arthur, Butch Walker and Marah will rock the "Mojo Aid" benefit at Irving Plaza.

Debbie Harry will join the Jazz Passengers and Elvis Costello at the marathon "A Jazz and Creative Music All-Star Benefit for the Artists of New Orleans" on Tuesday, September 20 at the Angel Orensanz Foundation for the Arts. The five-and-a-half-hour concert, put on by the folks behind the Vision Festival, also includes performances by avant-garde jazz staples like John Zorn, William Parker, Dave Douglas and Matthew Shipp, as well as Yo La Tengo collaborating with Other Dimensions in Music and poet Amiri Baraka. Oddly enough, Steve Buscemi is one of the emcees.

That same night, Elvis will be jetting across town to take part in the mammoth "From the Big Apple to the Big Easy" extravaganza at Madison Square Garden, alongside Fats Domino, Allen Toussaint, Elton John, Stevie Nicks, Simon and Garfunkel and other stars. The organizers of that event are also staging a simultaneous, smaller-scale show at Radio City Music Hall, featuring Dave Matthews, John Mayer, Trey Anastasio, Joss Stone, and the elusive Tom Waits. If he doesn't play "I Wish I Was in New Orleans", I predict a riot.

The New Yorker is sponsoring "Parting the Waters", an evening of words and music featuring such literary luminaries as Woody Allen and Toni Morrison alongside rock legends like Lou Reed andÑsurprise!ÑElvis Costello. The event will take place September 24 at Town Hall.

Brooklyn's hipster community is showing their support for the cause with "Brooklyn Responds", two nights of indie rock at Southpaw. Radio 4 and Craig Wedren headline on September 21, and the Wrens, Matthew and Ira of Nada Surf and Richard Buckner lead the lineup on September 25. Trucker hats for relief!

* As previously reported, Michael Jackson is recording a brand new song, "From the Bottom of My Heart", as an all-star benefit single. So far, Mariah Carey, Snoop Dogg, Jay-Z, James Brown, R. Kelly, Lenny Kravitz, Missy Elliott, Ciara, Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, Yolanda Adams, Mary J. Blige and the O'Jays have all signed on, according to Billboard. Wyclef Jean and Lauryn Hill are also taking part, making this the closest thing we've got to a Fugees reunion for awhile.

* Indie labels continue to pitch in. Saddle Creek plans to release a benefit compilation featuring new songs from Bright Eyes, Cursive, The Faint, The Good Life, Mayday, Orenda Fink, Maria Taylor, Andy LeMaster, Broken Spindles, Criteria, and others. Temporary Residence is donating ten percent of all mail order sales made between September 1 and October 31 to the Red Cross.
