The M's Sign to Polyvinyl, Take up Residency in Chicago

Inheritors of the grand tradition of letter-named acts like X (the one from L.A.), Q and Not U, Papa M, Ya Kid K, K's Choice, X (the one from Australia), and, of course, M (remember "Pop Musik"?), Chicago power-pop quartet the M's also hold the distinction of being the third-ever band to play the Intonation Festival. OK, so that's not particularly distinctive, but where was YOUR band on the Intonation bill, huh? HUH? Yeah, thought so.

The M's suffered from a stroke of bad luck last month when their van, affectionately known as "The Blue Period", was stolen. It hasn't been recovered yet, but things have otherwise been looking up for the band. They recently signed to indie/emo powerhouse Polyvinyl Record Co., home of marquee names like Mates of State, Of Montreal, and Rainer Maria. Their Polyvinyl debut, Future Women, is scheduled for a February 21 release.

A video for "Mansion in the Valley" has been filmed, and the M's plan to debut many of the new tunes during their upcoming month-long weekly residency at Schubas in Chicago, which promises to be the biggest thing to hit Monday night since Dennis Miller. That gig is part of the club's "Practice Space" program, which has hosted similar residencies by the likes of The Changes, The Sun, The Webb Brothers, and Rachel Yamagata in the past. Once the album drops, look for a longer M's tour.
