Lady Sovereign Signs to Def Jam, Kicks Off Tour Tonight

Poised to explode in 2006, feisty grime queen and hoodie-saviour Lady Sovereign will plant a few fuses in select U.S. and Canadian cities beginning tonight, as she sets out on her first full American tour. The "vertically challenged" UK MC recently freestyled for reigning hip-hop monarch Jay-Z, which lead to Jigga's signing her up as the latest soldier in his Def Jam army. (Her debut album, tentatively titled Public Warning, is scheduled for a spring 2006 release.)

The last time a Def Jam recording artist toured venues this small, a riot broke out and Pitchfork's ad guy had to take his friend to the hospital. Get on up:

11-28 Boston, MA - Middle East
11-30 New York, NY - Knitting Factory
12-01 Philadelphia, PA - Silk City
12-02 Montreal, Quebec - La Tulipe
12-03 Toronto, Ontario - Revival
12-06 Chicago, IL - Empty Bottle
12-09 San Francisco, CA - Live 105 party
12-13 Los Angeles, CA - Cinespace

Lady Sov dropped her U.S. debut EP Vertically Challenged via Chocolate Industries a couple weeks back, and her latest UK single, Hoodie, came out just prior to Turkey Day. And despite being signed to one of the largest record companies in the world, Sov still wears her house keys around her neck wherever she goes.
