Can Schedule More Reissues, DVD

Can there be too much Can? No there can't! At least Mute Records doesn't think so, as they have unveiled the latest installment in their effort to re-release every sound and image ever recorded by the Krautrock legends. Can can can you do the can can?

In conjunction with Can's own Spoon records, Mute will reissue 1981's Delay 1968, 1976's Flow Motion, 1977's Saw Delight, 1979's Can, and 1989's Rite Time on an unspecified date in March. These late-period discs follow the resurrections of Future Days, Landed, Soon Over Babaluma, and Unlimited Edition this past summer, and Monster Movie, Tago Mago, Ege Bamyasi, and Soundtracks last fall, and will feature the same shiny remastered sound. But don't expect any bonus trax, as a Mute rep told us that the discs will likely be straight-up re-pressings of the original LP releases.

Can't wait? Cancel your plans for January 24, light a bunch of candles, and put a big bowl of candy in front of the TV set, because that day will see the reissue of 2003's cannily-titled Can DVD. Much to eBay's delight, this new version will only contain two of the original's three discs, losing the accompanying soundtrack CD.

Can DVD collects three films from the band's past. Can Free Concert captures the German experimental godfathers performing before an audience of 10,000 in Cologne in 1972. (Yes, a time existed when a band like Can could draw that many people. It's called "before you were born.") Can Documentary is a career-spanning history lesson. Can Notes chronicles the band and its members' solo projects from 1997 to today. Speaking of solo projects, the reissue also includes four new remixes in 5.1 Surround Sound by band members: "Half Past One" by Irmin Schmidt, "Below This Level" by Jaki Liebezeit, and "Get the Can" and "Smoke" by Holger Czukay. Rounding out the package are a number of extras, including documentary footage of the remix process, a short Can film by uber-geek Brian Eno, a photo gallery, and a complete discography. As if that wasn't enough, the package will also contain a link to a secret Can website with more photos and interviews.

In other Can news, founding member Irmin Schmidt will be in the U.S. next month to give a special presentation of his work at the Composers/Performers Forum at the California Institute of the Arts. The event is scheduled for December 12 in Los Angeles. If nothing else, will sure beat the hell out of dragging your significant other to yet another tired rendition of The Canterbury Tales this year.
