Coxsone Dodd, Studio One Celebrated With Reissues
Pitchfork? Reggae? You bet your lunch money, rude boy. As reported a couple of years ago here, legendary Jamaican producer and record mogul Clement "Coxsone" Dodd, proprietor of the influential Studio One label, passed away in 2004. Now, thanks to Heartbeat Records, a series of titles highlighting the Studio One legacy will introduce a new generation to the man's formidable discography.Dodd discovered such acts as Bob Marley and the Wailers, the Heptones, Burning Spear, and Marcia Griffiths, all of which (and many more) appear throughout Heartbeat's extensive reissue campaign. The series, which celebrates 50 years of Dodd's career, begins on January 24 with The Best of Studio One, Full Up: More Hits from Studio One, and Downbeat the Ruler: Killer Instrumentals from Studio One. Following this comes Bob Marley and the Wailers' One Love at Studio One, arriving at a record store near you on February 14.
Heartbeat plans to release between one and three Studio One favorites each month, wrapping up the extravaganza with a Wailers box set in the fall. Each title has been remastered from its original form and features rare and previously unreleased tracks and/or new liner notes. Soul Jazz, watch your back!
