Enon Schedule U.S. Shows, Search for New Member

A: This member of a wacko influential band with a cult following formed another wacko band with an equally devoted following and is one of indie rock's most longstanding and inventive songwriters.

Q: Who is John Schmersal?

Former Brainiac guitarist and current Enon frontman Schmersal has a lot of tricks up his sleeves, and he'll continue to whip 'em out long after the kids have been put to bed. The man is tireless.

Pitchfork recently caught up with Schmersal on various curricular and extracurricular activities. In an e-mail to us, he revealed, "We are working on a new album, but not really in a big rush. We've all been doing other things as well. I have been recording bands lately and doing some compositional stuff for TV. We might have some singles come out in the meantime, but the album thing is not slated and we like it that way."

When asked to describe the new material, Schmersal said, "The new music is rocking. It's made for live and it makes you grind your teeth." Fans will get a chance to hear the new material (and earn a trip to the dentist) when Enon goes on tour starting later this month.

Brush 'em like crazy:

03-24 Telluride, CO - Sheridan Opera House
03-25 Denver, CO - Bluebird Theater
04-15 Richmond, IN - Earlham College
04-18 Akron, OH - Lime Spider
04-19 Cleveland, OH - The Spot, Case Western Reserve University 04-20 Newport, KY - Southgate House
04-21 Columbus, OH - Little Brother's
04-22 Notre Dame, IN - Legends

Schmersal has spent a good deal of time behind the boards recently, producing the now-defunct Mean Reds for Record Collection and currently working on the Annuals' debut album, to be released by Ace Fu sometime this summer.

As for his media side gigs, Schmersal recorded musical spots for the Sundance Channel and did some demos for a cartoon movie "that are hilarious, but until they are absolutely positively accepted for sure it's not worth mentioning."

Enon drummer Matt Schultz has been doing kit work for folk-rockers the Boggs, who have an album entitled Forts coming out later this year.

Finally, if rocking out with a try-anything electro-pop band is your dream, boy, have we got the opportunity for you: Enon is looking for a fourth band member. Ideally, Schmersal would like a new recruit "who can fill the gaps. I really want to have two guitars going on again. I miss that. It'd be sweet if they were multitalented though. And a swell character." Interested parties can go to the band's web site for more information. None of this middleman shit!
