Mouse on Mars, Hrvatski Party With Robots at Fest

Music festivals, stop copying Woodstock! You don't have to put your party out in a field. Follow the lead of the first annual STRP Festival, which will take place March 24-26 in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, at the former Dutch industrial center of electronics giant Philips. How dystopian.

The festival takes its moniker from the area's name, Strijp-S, and will feature live performances from Mouse on Mars, Hrvatski, Atom Heart, David Grubbs, Daniel Wang, ex-Kraftwerk percussionist Karl Bartos, Zeena Parkins & Ikue Mori, DMX Krew, Octave One, Dexter, Like a Tim, and many other electronic acts from all over the world.

In case those live sets move around a little too much for you, STRP will also feature DJ sets from Wang, Jeff Mills, Derrick May, DJ Krust, and others. Oh and did we mention there will be robots? Yes. Robots. In addition to the music, STRP will feature robotics demonstrations, interactive art, film screenings, lectures, and "live cinema."

So what's in it for you, the cash-strapped, stranded American who can't drop everything and head to Europe in three days? Well, the confluence of musicians at STRP has inspired a remix album that will be available at the festival and through Basta Records afterwards. The project revolves around the work of former Strijp-S/Philips engineer Dick Raaijmakers, whose late-50s compositions were among the first generation of post-war electronically-produced sound.

The album, STRP1, features several STRP performers plus a few additions such as Jason Forrest, Thurston Moore, Isolée, and Keith Fullerton Whitman playing himself instead of Hrvatski. Each remixer has reworked one of Raaijmakers' pieces, except for Mouse on Mars, Isolée, and Edwin van der Heide, who have produced remixes "of the style of Dick Raaijmakers, translated to modern times and technologies," according to the STRP organizers.

And now, the robots paired with their source material:

Atom Heart - "Collonel Bogey"
Beautyon - "Filmmuziek"
