Kanye, Deerhoof, Feist, Tribe to Rock Bumbershoot

Ah, Seattle, that erstwhile capital of grunge, and eternal capital of rain. When it came time to pick a funny word for their annual "Music & Arts" festival, the city found a good one: bumbershoot--meaning, appropriately, "umbrella." Now in its impressive 36th year (take that, Coachbonnagooserado!), the Bumbershooters have just announced the initial lineup for the 2006 edition of their festival, set to explode Labor Day weekend in the shadow of the Space Needle (provided the clouds actually part), also known as the Seattle Center.

Topping the bill is festival-whore Kanye West and the reunited A Tribe Called Quest. Other acts of note include Deerhoof, Feist, Jamie Lidell, Atmosphere, Mates of State, Of Montreal, the Blood Brothers, Bettye Lavette, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, the English Beat (!), the Gossip, Laura Veirs, Nouvelle Vague, Vashti Bunyan, Metric, Dengue Fever, and a triple-threat of pop-punk: Hawthorne Heights, AFI, and Yellowcard.

Festival organizers opted to hold this year's Bumbershoot on a Saturday-Monday, September 2-4, rather than the Friday-Monday schedule of previous years. Passes for the multi-venue festival go on sale July 15 on the fest's website.

So that's the Music side of things. What about the Arts? The Bumber also boasts two comedy tents, a poster art fair, readings from authors, a film festival, and a freakin' roller-derby. So, like, something for the whole family.

In summation: Bummer-shoot 2006? Hells no!
