Infinite Mixtape #23: Susanna and the Magical Orchestra: "Love Will Tear Us Apart"

Covers are usually sorta the work of The Beast, always promising to breathe new life into beloved tracks, but usually inflicting more pain than pleasure. But somehow Joy Division tracks seem to lend themselves to perfect reinterpretation-- from Low's dream-pop "Transmission" to Jah Division's "Dub Will Tear Us Apart".

Now, bringing Ian Curtis' despairing lyrics to the fore, Norway-based Susanna and the Magical Orchestra ratchet up the bedroom melancholy for this stunning reversion that's rightly been referred to as "rainy day dynamite."

Due August 21 via Norwegian experimental powerhouse Rune Grammofon, keyboardist Morten Qvenild (Jaga Jazzist, Shining) and singer Susanna Karolina Wallumrød's forthcoming second album as Susanna & The Magical Orchestra consists completely of covers. Hopefully it does as much justice to Prince, AC/DC, Scott Walker, and Leonard Cohen as to one of Ian Curtis' most devastating moments.
