MP3: Lily Allen: "Smile (Gutter Mix)"
"Smile", Lily Allen's UK chart-topping summer jam has gotten a sweaty club makeover courtesy of Baltimore/NYC DJ/producer Aaron LaCrate and his partner Debonair Samir. Bringing silly Lily to the streets, the pair have layered synthesized handclaps, electro-fuzz, and aggro WHAT! WHAT!s over Lily's chopped-up vocals to produce a club mix that'll give Allen-ites something else to play, like, a million times. (Current MySpace plays on "Smile": 786,891!)
The "Smile" remix isn't the only thing on Aaron LaCrate's plate right now. The man-about-town has been busy championing Baltimore club music everywhere from mix tapes to MTV, producing and remixing (along with Debonair Samir) Spank Rock, Jurassic 5, Busta Rhymes, Jim Jones, E-40 and others, and designing shoes through his clothing label Milkcrate Athletics in collaboration with Vans. LaCrate will release his self-produced solo debut Bodymore Murdaland (featuring Lily Allen, Biz Markie, Uffie and others) next year, as well as a mix tape on Koch this October.
Allen isn't slowing down either. The fast-rising star tours the UK and Australia in August and on into the fall.
