Stream: Jonny Greenwood: "Popcorn Superhet Receiver"

Radiohead multi-instrumentalist/BBC composer in residence Jonny Greenwood is nominated for the Listeners' Award at this year's British Composer Awards for "Popcorn Superhet Receiver", his orchestral piece commissioned by the BBC and first performed by the BBC Concert Orchestra in April of last year.

As a classical know-nothing, I would be a fool to try to describe the 18-minute-plus piece other than to say that, like a lot of things Radiohead does, it's both pretty and a little creepy. The track is currently streaming from the BBC's website, along with the eight other works nominated for the Listeners' Award, i.e. a bunch of pieces with "concerto" in their titles.

Voting for the Listeners' Award is taking place now at the website. The British Composer Awards will take place November 24 in London.

In other news, Jonny's main gig is firing up the gears once again. Thom Yorke posted to Radiohead's blog on Sunday that "weve started the record properly now. starting to get somewhere i think. finally."

Finally, indeed.
