M83, Xiu Xiu, Amy Millan, Beach House on Montag LP
Montag wants YOU to help record his album
French-Canadian electronic artist Montag gave his last album the ambiguous title Alone, Not Alone, but we reckon he's very much the latter these days, having enlisted a small festival's worth of A-list indie acts to guest on the forthcoming follow-up, Going Places.
Montag hasn't quite finished the disc yet, but hopes to release it in June of next year via Carpark Records, who also delivered Alone. Among the contributors set to go Places: Stars' Amy Millan (who appeared on Alone as well), M83, Ghislain Poirier, Victoria Legrand of Carpark labelmates Beach House, New York synth-pop trio Au Revoir Simone, Vancouver-based folk singer Leah Abramson, and Xiu Xiu's Jamie Stewart-- with whom Montag (real name Antoine Bédard) duets.
"It only gets weird," wrote Bédard in an e-mail to Pitchfork, "when I sing a duet with Jamie...just because men on men duets make people feel awkward, I think. I love them. We need more men on men duets. I'm really happy with that song."
Bédard goes on to describe the overall sound of Going Places as "happy and fun", despite including "a few songs directly inspired by dead people I met in my dreams."
Now here's where you come in: not unlike Matthew Herbert, who invited folks to phone in messages that later appeared on Scale's penultimate track "Just Once", Montag is asking fans the world over to help contribute sonic elements to Going Places.
As part of a project he's dubbed "We Have Sound", Montag is seeking 15-second sound snippets from musicians and non-musicians alike, in 192 kbps mp3 format, sent to the address wehavesoundproject@yahoo.ca. Anybody with Internet access and a recording device of some sort can partake, and the artist intends to incorporate every single entry he receives into Going Places' title track. Better start making some noise soon though, because snippets are due January 1.
And you've got options. Start by downloading and listening to the sound clip linked below, and then, writes Montag on his bilingual website, "Jam on it, have fun playing other sounds on top of it, record your own voice, sing, write a melody, say something in your language, read a message, record your sister while she's practicing the piano, a phrase, record a conversation, handclaps, sounds of the streets in your neighborhood..."
Herbert received at least one death threat on his "Herbert Hotline". How many will Montag get? That's entirely up to you, my friend.
