Carlos D Reps Classical Music on Guardian Blog
The D don't stand for "dilettante," people.
Perhaps a wee bit overeager to distance himself from the decadent world of rock music-- not to mention lend some cred to his lofty film scoring aspirations-- Carlos D posted his inaugural blog entry on the Guardian's webpage this morning.
In the post, titled (by a snide editor and not Carlos, we hope to God) "Forget rock: I only listen to symphony orchestras", Carlos makes a case for his music of choice-- not the rock, as the casual Interpol listener might suspect, but "the gorgeous and inexhaustible power of strings, winds, brass, and percussion."
Carlos explains his on-off relationship with these sounds most often grouped as "Classical": he turned to it as an "opposite extreme" to rock as a teenager, then relapsed some as Interpol took off and he became "ready to start socializing like a normal human being again." Now Carlos and symphonic sounds are very much in love once more, monogamously.
"I've immersed myself totally in this genre of music to the exclusion of all others," writes Carlos. While it's not clear whether or how soon we can expect future Carlos D blog entries, you can check out the first one in its entirety here. Also, no word yet on Gaius the Italian greyhound's feelings toward classical music.
As Carlos concludes, "If I want to hear the sound of guitar and drums, these days I simply play a show with my band."
And indeed, having already endeavored to bring orchestra-appropriate attire to beer-soaked rock stages around the globe, this classical music cognoscente will deign to don the low-ly bass at a whole flaming mass of Interpol gigs in the coming months. Our Love to Admire, as you know, lands July 10.
