Barnes Hints at New Of Montreal LP in MySpace Rant
"A lot of the people I've played the new songs for have been confused. I'm probably going to lose some fans but I don't care. I don't care because, I'm enjoying myself. I don't care because, I'm following the organic path of my muse, or whatever."

Kevin Barnes isn't much for privacy, so when he posted a lengthy rant on Of Montreal's MySpace blog yesterday referencing both Barbra Streisand and GG Allin, it wasn't entirely surprising to find that, in a roundabout way, he was also talking about the new Of Montreal album.
Here are the things we learned from the diatribe, titled "women in children first" (a Freudian nightmare of a typo all by itself):
1) Barnes is a fan of French author Jean Genet because of "his portrayal of the criminal and the profane" side of human nature, which Barnes feels is sorely lacking in indie rock, but not hip-hop (though he believes most rappers are "portraying themselves in an ugly way unintentionally").
2) Barnes' solution to this problem is to play "the drunken uncle [who] shows up, uninvited, to the birthday party and vomits on the couch." So he's "exploring the dark and gloriously detestable sides of my consciousness" in the writing of his band's Hissing Fauna follow-up. However, "a lot of the people I've played the new songs for have been confused. I'm probably going to lose some fans but I don't care. I don't care because I'm enjoying myself. I don't care because I'm following the organic path of my muse, or whatever."
3) Something about Barbra Streisand and GG Allin.
Perhaps Barnes will clarify on Of Montreal's previously reported fall tour, which starts September 28 in Carrboro, North Carolina after Barnes and bandmate Bryan Poole's performance at the Boston Revenge of the Book Eaters on September 26.
