Byrne/Dirty Projectors Collab, Sufjan, Feist on Comp
Plus: the Decemberists, the National, Grizzly Bear, Sharon Jones
Red Hot is an organization dedicated to raising money for AIDS research and relief efforts, famed for its collaboration-heavy Red Hot + tribute compilations. Those comps have paid homage over the years to everyone from George Gershwin, Cole Porter, and Fela Kuti to various regional music traditions, and they've featured a pretty enviable list of contributors, including Sonic Youth, Wu-Tang Clan, Tom Waits, David Bowie, De La Soul, Brian Eno, Pavement, Iggy Pop, Wilco, Madonna, David Byrne, and legions more.
And what do you know: building-rocker Byrne is back on board for the latest Red Hot compilation, according to a post on the man's website. And he's not alone. Writes Byrne, "I recorded a couple of songs...with the band Dirty Projectors" [via Stereogum].
After praising the je ne sais quoi appeal of the Dirty Projectors' music, Byrne notes, "I'd been told more than once that we should all work together, and it seems the suggestion was fated to be realized." As for the fruits of this fated collaboration, Byrne mentions contributing vocals, guitar, various tweaks, and some lyrics he wrote up back in the mid-1970s to a pair of songs. You can read more of his thoughts on working with Dirty Projectors here.
The ex-Talking Head also reveals a few of the comp's other purported contributors, and they are a bunch to be reckoned with: Sufjan Stevens, Feist, the Decemberists, the National, Grizzly Bear, and Sharon Jones (Byrne doesn't mention whether Jones will be joined by the Dap-Kings). We're with David on this one: "Jeez, what a lineup!"
According to the Dirty Projectors' publicist, the comp was curated by the National's Bryce Dessner, and, well, that's about all we know about it right now. Stay tuned for the inevitable update.
