New Sigur Ros LP Features NSFW Art, Song in English!
After years of trying to decipher what Jón Thor Birgisson has been singing in all those Sigur Rós songs all those years, we finally have a reprieve. While most of the band's forthcoming fifth album, Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust, is sung in Icelandic, there is one song with English lyrics. We imagine it's the one called "All Alright", because...just look at all those other titles [after the jump].
But what delicate truths might Birgisson bestow upon our vulgar ears? Considering that the album's title translates into English as "With a buzz in our ears we play endlessly," it could be something as simple as, "This is a song/ we are playing it for you/ enjoy a nap or a good cry if you'd like."
The follow-up to 2005's Takk comes out in the UK June 23 via EMI and in North America June 24 via XL. Album opener "Gobbledigook" (ha!) will debut on BBC Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe's program later today, and then will be available via free download on the band's website at 2:30 p.m. EST. The song's video will premiere on the site today as well.
Pre-orders for Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust begin via Sigur Rós' website on June 2, and all pre-orders come with a download of the album a week before its physical release. Also available for pre-order on that date is the deluxe edition of the record, which will be released later this year. The deluxe edition features a "making of" book and a movie, among other things.
Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust includes musical contributions from string quartet Amiina, the London Sinfonietta, the London Oratory Boy's Choir, and a five-piece brass section. As previously reported, visual artist Ryan McGinley designed the album's artwork. That's the cover up there.
Finally, Sigur Rós still have a ton of tour dates to play this summer, and even more shows around the world are yet to be announced.
