Of Montreal Sign To Polyvinyl, Embrace Satan
Übertwee Elephant 6'ers writing song about pimp life pays 400:1 in Pitchfork office pool

Of Montreal, arguably one of Kindercore Records' biggest acts, have moved on to another label to release their new record (which, if our previous reports about the internal squabbles at Kindercore are any indication, was both a financial and artistic necessity, not to mention a very good idea). According to the band's official website, their sixth album, Satanic Panic in the Attic, will be released April 6th on Polyvinyl Records.

The album will also come with some goodies, in the form of a bonus seven-inch included with the vinyl, and a bonus EP with four exclusive tracks to be given away free with purchase of the album through mail order and at your fine neighborhood independent record store.

Now, when it comes to Of Montreal, people tend to fall either on the "love it" or "hate it" side of the fence. Though both immensely talented and endlessly creative, the band, led by frontman Kevin Barnes, has largely tread similar whimsical ground on every release since their 1997 debut, Cherry Peel. However, Polyvinyl has released some information about the sound of the new record, and, well, just check it out: "The sound of Satanic Panic is a little bit of a departure from Of Montreal's previous releases. The influence of 1970s Afro beat and '80s new wave can be clearly heard, and the songs are full downright danceable electro-hooks." Would you care to join me for a "What the fuck?!?"

However, a perusal of the bands official website yields MP3s off the new album, and damn if it doesn't sound, well, different. And good.

The tracklist for the album and the seven-inch follow; the tracklist for the bonus EP isn't finalized yet, but the word from Polyvinyl is that "it will consist of contemporary covers"-- songs by The Shins and Gorky's Zygotic Mynci are two that are being considered. Finally, the band will be touring extensively in support of the new album; the dates aren't finalized, but it should start in early April. Oh yeah, that tracklist:
