Interview

David as Keith

David Spinx

19.06.2008

David talks about filming Keith's dramatic rescue of Dawn and how he feels about saying goodbye to Walford.

How does Keith react when he sees his home explode, with Dawn, Summer and Mickey inside?

Keith

He's appalled and shocked and feels totally helpless. He doesn’t know or understand how it happened. He’s unable to help and is rooted to the ground. He wants to do something, but fails to do it. It’s a big one for him - the failure.

Does Keith blame himself?

He doesn’t blame himself. The real danger is what he's going to do now, so blame doesn’t come into it.

What was it like recording the rescue scenes?

Filming these scenes was the toughest work we have done. It was pouring with rain, freezing cold and took three long, 12-hour days to get it all right.

Does Keith feel protective of Dawn?

Summer and Dawn

Yes, Keith definitely feels the need to protect Dawn. He has always looked out for her and brought her up when she was younger, so there will always be that strong sense of family. She has always called him Keith, but I think he's praying for the day she finally calls him Dad.

What does he make of her relationship with Jase?

Like any of Dawn’s previous boyfriends they have to be vetted by Keith. Jase seems to be very hard-working and trustworthy. Keith realises Jase is still on a learning curve with having Jay around and is forever giving him advice about being a dad, but there is an element of trust there.

Describe Keith in three words...

Well most people would immediately say lazy, but Keith doesn’t think he’s lazy. I think if Keith were to describe himself he would say 'loveable old hippy'. My three words would be complicated, lazy, and profound.

Are you like Keith?

Keith

I'm probably as chilled and relaxed as Keith, but unlike him I do get off my backside and do things. I just can’t imagine sitting there all day doing nothing. He really does have it down to a fine art.

What have you enjoyed most about playing Keith?

I love the way the writers at EastEnders write for Keith. They obviously have a field day with his dialogue. Keith says all sorts of nonsense, but he says it with such conviction that it can be totally believable.

Can you tell us anything about Keith's departure later this year?

My departure from EastEnders is quite dramatic and heroic. Not only the exit but all the build-up too. Keith gets good!

How are you feeling about leaving EastEnders?

I am leaving the show after almost four years. I’ve had the most fabulous time, it’s been hard work but complex and rewarding. I’m sad to go, but we all move on at some point.

Will you miss working with Genghis?

Genghis

In a nutshell, no! I love the dog but it takes twice as long to do anything if he is in the scene and he's quite a handful. I got to know him quite well, but it’s true that it’s hard working with animals.
