Director: Ken Kwapis Stars: Ginnifer Goodwin, Jennifer Aniston, Jennifer Connelly (Full Cast) Studio: New Line Cinema The Plot: Romantic woes affect an interconnected group of Baltimore singles and marrieds.
THE BUZZ: We thought 2008 was all about 80s retro, but this movie looks to kick up the breezy nostalgia of the late 90s -- back when most of Into You's cast was in ascension. The source material here, the best-selling book by former Sex and the City story editor Greg Behrendt, is also responsible for the wayback effect. We wish star/producer Drew Barrymore would have shelled out for more reliable behind-the-camera talent, since the writer-direction trio makes us say yikes. Speaking of Ms. Barrymore, who is directing her first feature with Ellen Page in the lead role, she hooked up with co-star Justin Long during filming (and then they broke up -- old news!); elsewhere, Jennifer Aniston was linked to Bradley Cooper for a bit. But no one wanted to even flirt with Ben Affleck. Here'zzzzz the trailer. Director: Harald Zwart Stars: Steve Martin, Jean Reno, Emily Mortimer (Full Cast) Studio: Columbia Pictures The Plot: Insp. Jacques Clouseau (Martin) teams up with a squad of International detectives who are just as bumbling as he is. Their mission: Stop a globe-trotting thief who specializes in stealing historical artifacts. THE BUZZ: Ooh, they pulled a Rachel Dawes here and replaced Kevin Kline with John Cleese in the role of Chief Inspector Dreyfus. Shawn Levy passed on the sequel in order to helm Night at the Museum 2, making way for Agent Cody Banks director Harald Zwart (we'd like to hear Martin-as-Clouseau say his name). That must have saved the production beaucoup dollars. All of this switcheroo neatly conceals the plot, which sounds like Clouseau hunting down Nic Cage in National Treasure. Luckily, this one has even cuter support staff, with a band of inspectors that includes Andy Garcia, Aishwarya Rai, and Alfred Molina. Director: Henry Selick Stars: Dakota Fanning, Teri Hatcher, John Hodgman (Full Cast) Studio: Focus Features The Plot: A secret door in her family's new house offers a passage way to an unusual parallel world for young Coraline.
THE BUZZ: Director Selick (the unsung hero behind Tim Burton's A Nightmare Before Christmas) finally gets his chance to shine, or at least step out of Burton's shadow and with the perfect material for him. By perfect, we mean super creepy. And by unsung, we mean he directed Nightmare not Burton (look it up). If you're a Burton fan or thought the underwater claymation scenes from The Life Aquatic were the best part of that movie, then Selick's solo work is for you. If you're a fan of 3-D stop-motion animation, then the LA Times' behind-the-scenes photo gallery is just for you. Message Boards: When did you read the book? | Saw The SCREEING - EXELLENT movie . Director: Kyle Newman Stars: Dan Fogler, Jay Baruchel, Kristen Bell (Full Cast) Studio: Weinstein Company, The The Plot: Four guys and their galpal plan a cross-country trip in order to steal a print of Star Wars: Episode I -- The Phantom Menace from Skywalker Ranch so their dying friend can see it before its world premiere.
THE BUZZ: Here's the trailer. Director Kyle Newman's comedy, which traveled a bumpy road to its theatrical release, restores a sense of nostalgia -- we just wish it traveled all the way back to those halcyon days before the Star Wars episodes were renumbered and Jar Jar Binks was under wraps at Skywalker Ranch. Still, you have to hand it to the real-world fanboys and girls who lobbied Harvey Weinstein until the big softie agreed to release Newman's cut of the film. If I were being called "Darth Weinstein" for stripping a film of its context, I'd probably cave after a few rounds with the Faithful, too ... Director: Paul McGuigan Stars: Camilla Belle, Dakota Fanning, Chris Evans (Full Cast) Studio: Summit Entertainment The Plot: In Hong Kong, a trio of young people with special abilities are pursued by a clandestine U.S. government agency who wants the gifted ones back in their fold.
THE BUZZ: I think director Paul McGuigan (Wicker Park, Lucky Number Slevin) has a thing for too-intricate storylines; during Push's 2008 Comic-Con panel, poor Camilla Belle stumbled through a plot explanation that began to sound like playing rounds of Magic: The Gathering. Djimon Hounsou, meanwhile, could barely remember his role in the movie. Good thing Dakotah Fanning then popped out to, like, tell the crowd she finally lost all of her baby teeth. Or something. Director: Matteo Garrone Stars: Gianfelice Imparato, Salvatore Abruzzese, Toni Servillo (Full Cast) Studio: IFC Films The Plot: A drama of five interconnected stories, each of them illustrating the levels of organized crime in modern-day Naples.
THE BUZZ: Matteo Garrone's adaptation of Roberto Saviano's sensation-causing book burst onto the international scene by winning the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes back in May. En route to its U.S. release, it earned 5 European Film Awards, became Italy's Foreign-Language Oscar pick (eclipsing Il Divo in both instances), found an American sponsor in Martin Scorsese, and -- oh yeah -- three of the film's actors have been connected to actual-real mob activities. Other fun facts about this should've-been-Oscar contender: Author Saviano, who had a hand in the screenplay, has been living under 24-hour protection since the release of his book; however, to strengthen the film's anti-hero sentiment, Saviano is not a character in the narrative. Director: P.J. Hogan Stars: Isla Fisher, Hugh Dancy, Krysten Ritter (Full Cast) Studio: Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures The Plot: Charming Manhattanite Rebecca Bloomwood (Fisher) is an out-of-control spender/fashionista, so it's a bit ironic when she lands a job as an advice columnist for a financial magazine, and she becomes an instant celebrity -- complete with access to all the fabulous things she so desires. But will her compulsive habits ruin her career, and her new-found romance?
THE BUZZ: It's a chick-lit showdown this month, with Isla Fisher in Shopaholic and a clutch of serious contenders that is the principal cast of He's Just Not That Into You. We love an underdog, especially one as otherworldly beautiful as Ms. Fisher (when will she and Sacha Baron Cohen tie the knot?), but Shopaholic descends from the massively popular novels by real-life financial journalist Madeleine Wickham (pen name: Sophie Kinsella), whose Undomestic Goddess is being developed by Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal. The trailer is a bit of a puzzle -- as in, just because someone is good at slapstick, that doesn't mean you have to incorporate it into your script. Also, we can't tell if the tone is supposed to be highbrow, low, or just kinda all over the place. Director: Tom Tykwer Stars: Clive Owen, Naomi Watts, Armin Mueller-Stahl (Full Cast) Studio: Columbia Pictures The Plot: Interpol Agent Louis Salinger (Clive Owen) and Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Eleanor Whitman (Naomi Watts) pool their resources in an attempt to break up an international arms dealing ring financed by a high-profile bank. THE BUZZ: Has it really taken ten years for Hollywood to get the Run, Lola, Run director to make his first American, big-budget action-thriller? Embarrassing. Still, who cares, with Owen and Watts also on board, all is forgiven; plus, whoever thought to re-team Watts with Armin Mueller-Stahl is a casting genius. What we also love the most about this picture sight unseen? The fact that we finally get to see what Clive Owen would have been like as 007. Rumor has it the project was delayed for a bit to tweak it as more of an action film ... Director: Howard Hall Stars: Jim Carrey (Full Cast) Studio: IMAX The Plot: Jim Carrey narrates this underwater look at the diverse coastal regions of Southern Australia, New Guinea, and the Indo-Pacific areas, and the impact of global warming on the oceans. THE BUZZ: Deep Sea is like the Dark Side of the Moon of IMAX movies, in that it has been in general release since for over two years, and has grossed nearly $60 million in that time. No wonder Disney is rushing this sequel into theaters, with all the right behind-the-camera talent back in place. (Though I feel like they traded down a bit in the narrator department?) Director: Marcus Nispel Stars: Jared Padalecki, Amanda Righetti, Derek Mears (Full Cast) Studio: The Plot: A group of young adults discover a boarded up Camp Crystal Lake, where they soon encounter Jason Voorhees (Mears) and his deadly intentions. THE BUZZ: Most of the behind-the-camera dudes who made the well-received Texas Chainsaw Massacre are present here, including director Marcus Nispel and producers Andrew Form and Brad Fuller. Form and Fuller sneaked some footage and addressed fan concerns at Comic-Con this year, a sign of their commitment to the horror genre and its never-ending barrage of remakes and reboots. Expect to be treated to an old-school horror movie, heavy on slasher tension and a more aggressive Jason -- Derek Mears described his take on Voorhees as more of a fast-moving predator who sets up his prey. Also, Jason's mom figures into the action somehow! Message Boards: this cant be a remake... | Uncut Deaths? Showtimes | Trailers | Photos | Message Boards | User Comments | Reviews | ||||||
Director: James Gray Stars: Joaquin Phoenix, Gwyneth Paltrow, Vinessa Shaw (Full Cast) Studio: 2929 Productions The Plot: Leonard (Phoenix) returns to Brighton Beach, Brooklyn, where he soon falls for two very different women: the family friend his parents wish he would marry (Shaw) and his beautiful but volatile new neighbor (Paltrow).
THE BUZZ: Just in case you haven't heard Joaquin's confirmation that he's quitting acting, Two Lovers, which reunites Mr. Phoenix with We Own the Night director James Gray, looks to be his last big-screen performance. But I'm thinking he (in real life) might be as volatile as Gwyneth's character in this romantic drama, and he might reconsider his decision after a timeout. If not: Au revoir, Joaquin. THE BUZZ: Though you can buy the stage version of this story on DVD at your grocery store, something tells me Tyler Perry is going to experience his biggest success here, since he's back in hysteria-comedy mode (and in drags), with a fully grown Rudy Huxtable playing a streetwalker in the clink. Director: Miguel Arteta Stars: Michael Cera, Portia Doubleday, Ray Liotta (Full Cast) Studio: Dimension Films The Plot: Like most teens, young Nick Twisp (Cera) is ruled by his libido. And from the recesses of a trailer park in Northern California, Twisp concocts a plan -- make that multiple schemes -- to lose his virginity to a local girl, the precocious Sheeni Saunders (Doubleday). THE BUZZ: The search for Sheeni is over with the announcement that Portia Doubleday, soon to be seen on Showtime's new series, "The United States of Tara," has won the role that could give rise to Ellen Page-like sudden fame. Doubleday joins a phenomenal cast that includes Steve Buscemi, Jean Smart, and Zach Galifianakis in this year-end comedy that is sort of like a boy version of Juno? Michael Cera's role here should be a natural extension of the characters he's played thus far, seeing that YiR plays a bit more with teen identity and the imaginable embarrassments that come to those who try to find a place to masturbate while living with dysfunctional parents in an RV. (Is that more difficult than having a crush on your cousin? Hard to say.) Though Twisp is written as a 14 year old, I imagine his age will be blurred to be more Cera-appropriate. Director: Will Gluck Stars: Eric Christian Olsen, Nicholas D'Agosto, Sarah Roemer (Full Cast) Studio: Screen Gems The Plot: Two high school jocks decide to ditch their annual football training session for cheerleading camp, where they think their ruse will result in plenty of hook-ups. THE BUZZ: FU mastermind Will Gluck is, in a way, a sort of charmed prince: Despite having a say in a trio of failed TV shows (most recent attempt: "The Loop") he was able to parlay his small-screen efforts into a feature-film career -- this boy-perspective Bring It On copycat is the first in a Screen Gems planned series of Gluck-y sex comedies, and my fingers are crossed that he takes on Easy A next. Director: Andrzej Bartkowiak Stars: Kristin Kreuk, Neal McDonough, Michael Clarke Duncan (Full Cast) Studio: Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation The Plot: Interpol agent Chun-Li (Kreuk) enters an underground fighting tournament, with her eyes set on M. Bison (McDonough), the contest's founder and leader of a crime syndicate who may have been responsible for the death of Chun-Li's father.
THE BUZZ: You have a few more months to tighten up your Lightning Kick and get your hair into two perfect buns before Fox either a) "ruins" another fanboy property or b) launches the first film in a potential franchise with X-Men potential. Or both? Please note: I make that comparison in terms of the number of characters with shadowy pasts the story can explore, but I don't think this legend is going to break any box-office records (or put out two great movies, then a crappy third installment). So you're going to have to hit the theaters and pick this up on Blu-ray if you want to see Ken or Ryu in the future, and, while Kristen Kreuk was strung up with wires in order to simulate the moves that made Chun-Li the first lady of fighting games, there seems to be plenty of gun-toting action present here that will certainly upset purists (this is, after all, brought to you by the director of Doom). Meanwhile, another member of Black Eyed Peas goes rogue in order to, like, expand the pop group's "brand," or something. I think this interview with screenwriter Justin Marks is revelatory, and hopefully someone involved with the production will update their blog before Christmas. THE BUZZ: Director Bruce Hendricks is like the Kenny Ortega of all things Jonas Bros. and Miley Cyrus, having turned the latter phenomenon's movie debut into a quote-unquote surprise hit earlier this year. So why shouldn't Nick, Joe, and Kevin enjoy copycat success this February? Meanwhile, you know the Miley Cyrus camp is gearing up to stick it to ex-b.f. Director: Wayne Kramer Stars: Harrison Ford, Sean Penn, Ashley Judd (Full Cast) Studio: Weinstein Company, The The Plot: A multi-character drama centered around the issue of illegal immigration in the United States. THE BUZZ: A Crash-like look at immigration is what you can expect from Wayne Kramer's buzzing-since-2007 drama. Kramer himself is a naturalized citizen of the U.S. and he cribbed from his own experiences to create the character of a South African artist scheming to become naturalized; elsewhere, look for Kramer's focus to hone in Ford as a Customs Enforcement agent in Los Angeles and for a particularly trying storyline concerning Penn as a Border Patrolman along the U.S./Mexico border.
