Wrestling Ready to Hit the Mat in 2008-09

Fairfield, CT-The Pioneers enter the 2008-09 season with renewed hope behind second year coach Casey Brewster.  The CAA preseason poll has one Pioneer ranked in each of the 125-149 pound weight classes.  These weights will undoubtedly be Sacred Heart’s biggest strength entering the 2008-09 campaign.  Bill Beirmeister (Boonton, NJ) was also ranked for the Pioneers as a heavyweight.

Four other Pioneers received CAA rankings in the preseason poll.  Corey Dunn (Rutherford, NJ) and Chris Davis (Mohawk, NY) were both ranked third respectively at 133 and 141 pounds.  Paul Galipeau (Randolph, NJ) was tabbed fourth at 125 pounds as was Anthony Priore (Garwood, NJ) at 149 pounds.  Beirmeister was slated fifth in the heavyweight division. 

Head Coach Casey Brewster also conducted preseason wrestle-offs this past week.  The results of the matches were:

The Sacred Heart wrestling team will have its home opener Monday night as they take on Stevens Tech.  The Pioneers will open their season Saturday night at a tournament in Binghamton, NY.  SHU will have no home meets in December but will compete in the Body Bar Invitational and Penn State Open.  December also features a meet with Bloomsburg and Buffalo and a dual meet with Wagner.  In January the Pioneers welcome American International, Army, and Delaware State to the William H. Pitt Center.   SHU will also take on Franklin & Marshall and South Dakota State on the road.  January 16th and 17th the Pioneers will travel to Fairfax, VA for the CAA Duals.  Sacred Heart’s February schedule will feature four road dual meets with Binghamton, Boston University, Princeton, and Rider.  These matches will serve as excellent preparation for the CAA Championships which will take place on March 6th and 7th in Virginia Beach, VA.
