WATCHMEN: AN INTERVIEW WITH MALIN AKERMAN

Who watches Malin? The grim, noir laced phantasmagoria of faded superhero's and the various inter-personal demons they battle known as WATCHMEN has finally – after two decades of false starts – arrived on screen and man alive, is it an ambitious picture. Under the, um, watchful eye of director Zack Snyder, the same bloodthirsty stylist who brought you 300 and the controversial but otherwise pulse pounding DAWN OF THE DEAD remake, has taken great pains to ensure that the movie remains as faithful to writer Alan Moore’s text and artist David Gibbons’ illustrations as humanly possible, giving us a near 3 hour, ultra nihilistic and hyper intellectual audio and visual dark fantasy epic that is as bold, ballsy and brilliant as it is uneven and demanding.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: John Harrison talks BOOK OF BLOOD and composing the score for George Romero's ...OF THE DEAD

...OF THE DEADThe heart that pounds away in our chests only does so a finite amount of time so we owe it to ourselves to milk the maximum amount out of every moment and explore as many avenues of interest possible. Why settle for a single profession, a solitary job, one in which we lock in and tread water for the rest of our lives? Every personality has many appendages and there is no crime in sating  and expressing each and every one of them.

And, yeah, John Harrison is cool.

Chronicles of a Serial Killer- Part Seven

shannon_lark_pt_3Preparing for FANGORIA’S WEEKEND OF HORRORS in Chicago has definitely taken over my life. I just came back from vacation (read my last entry), and expected a bit of a rush on these urgent matters. However, I never expected that this song and dance have such a tremendous impact on who I kill, what I eat, and even the music I listen to.

GAY OF THE DEAD 5: Jason Paul Collum, Part One.

GAY OF THE DEADI first became aware of out/gay filmmaker Jason Paul Collum when I was surfing around the internet in 2007, right as SOCKET was starting to make the festival rounds. I hadn’t heard of his gay horror film, OCTOBER MOON, until I found his website. I emailed him, and we struck up a correspondence that continues to this day. We’ve actually met in person once, in Chicago, for a nice cup of coffee and chit-chat about indie filmmaking.

Chronicles of a Serial Killer- Part Six

This past week I was feeling a bit stagnant. Boredom is a nasty little virus that will eat all your creativity away if you let it. If you don’t feel inspired by killing people, there really might be something wrong with you and it could ruin everything.

Lloyd Kaufman feels the power of the MOTORHEAD

LEMMY KILMISTER and LLOYD KAUFMANWhat does Lloyd Kaufman have to do with Lemmy Kilmister from legendary rock band Motorhead?

We're not sure either, so you'll probably have to ask them yourselves. But, Lemmy did contribute his words to Lloyd's new book, DIRECT YOUR OWN DAMN MOVIE!, the latest release in his long-running "Your Own Damn Film School" series.  In place of Lloyd's normal blog this weekend, we're giving you a look at a scan of a Fax sent from Lemmy to Lloyd from a London hotel room last September. What was happening in said room can be left up to your imagination. Check out the evidence below the cut.

FANGORIA RADIO: INTERNal Injuries #1

FANGORIA RADIOAll you really need is one “Yes” in this world. Just one. One “come aboard” and you’re suddenly on your way. The path is paved; the road laid out before you. My “yes” came in the form of an unassuming email from Debbie Rochon telling me that, yes, in fact I had won the job of intern for FANGORIA RADIO.

Terrifyingly Gnarly #10: ACE'S HIGH

ACE NORTON likes it bloody“Give me a bucket of blood and a camera and I’m good to go!”

Who is Ace Norton? Someone who truly fits the description of Terrifyingly Gnarly, that’s who.

An interesting, immensely talented music video and commercial director, his work warrants your attention—urgently. Norton is currently one of the only people pushing and slowly joining the ranks of legends who have pushed the medium to the potential it could be used for. A bit of his résumé includes: two videos for Bloc Party, one featuring a bizarre plot to run the world by a large horse-headed creature (“Mercury”), the other, a classic man-in-monster-suit fight (“Flux”); a beautifully lensed video for Simian Mobile Disco, featuring incredibly hot girls transforming into creatures and vomiting; and the happily macabre “Why Do You Let Me Stay Here,” for Zooey Deschanel’s band, She & Him.

The Art of Trash: An Interview with VIVA filmmaker Anna Biller

VIVAOkay folks, here goes…

The following interview is a must read for fans of trash, cult and generally outlandish cinema. And sex. See, VIVA, a mind blowing recreation of early PLAYBOY magazine gloss and the sexploitation melodramas of Russ Meyer and H.G. Lewis fell onto my happy lap last week and, popping it in my player, I immediately fell in love.

Lloyd Kaufman: Obama and Infrastructure of the Mind

January 20, 2009, marked a day which will forever be etched in the minds of those who had the privilege of witnessing it.  A significant part of American history transpired: Barack Obama became the first half-black man to be sworn in as President of the United States since Warren G. Harding.  As a privileged, Jewish Yale graduate who grew up as a dirt-poor black boy, I was very excited for this momentous occasion.

Chronicles of a Serial Killer- Part Five

When the dead rot, it stinks.  I’m not saying that decaying flesh smells “slightly bad.” This is a terrible smell: one that can keep you awake at night. Sure, formaldehyde works, but Christ, that shit stinks too.  If you use the stuff, you are pretty much guaranteed to start smelling like a grave. I’m all for rolling around in arterial slime, but I also like Sunflowers perfume and that sweet sugar cookie body oil.

How Philip Kaufman's 1978 version of INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS (& the KISS album LOVE GUN) defined my life.

There were but two major childhood events that truly sealed the deal with me when it came to following my macabre muse, to forging a lifelong, lovely and lurid obsession with horror films and creepy culture. The first was when I saw the 1977 KISS album LOVE GUN at my local library. I was 3. The cover depicted the original four glam rockers in a garish painting, standing in chamber full of mist while a horde of pale, vampirish women swoon at their dragon heeled feet.
