Five Things I Love About John Carpenter


Good Lord!  How long have I been gone?  Well, here's the deal, Fangorians.  You may or may not know that I took over as team captain for Blog@Newsarama, with my new group kicking things off on December 1st.  I also made some preparations for my original site, ShotgunReviews.com, to begin celebrating its TENTH YEAR online.  Needless to say, it's been busy.  But I haven't wanted to neglect my Fango friends, so I've been giving a lot of thought to what to do for the third installment of this (now more) regular series.  The first two go-rounds, I talked '31 Frankenstein and Dracula.  I really kicked around covering Spanish Dracula, and I WILL get back to that eventually.  Today, though, I've decided to cover someone that's still in the game.  And I'll begin with this question: between 1978 and 1988, was there a genre director that had a better run than John Carpenter?

You may recall that I opened the new Unkillable Classics column with a discussion of Frankenstein.  It’s almost a given now that installment two should cover the other big Universal release of 1931, that other standard-bearer of the horror genre that’s forever linked to that first film.  The film for today is, of course, DRACULA.

FRANKENSTEIN (1931)Greetings, and welcome to the first installment of Unkillable Classics!  I’m Troy Brownfield, and I’m the Associate Editor for Fangoria Graphix.  One of the many other things that I do, along with writing for outlets like WIRED, Newsarama.com, and my own ShotgunReviews.com, is teach at the college level.  Specifically, I teach journalism and film classes.  Frequently, I run into students that have a hard time getting over the tiniest of hurdles in order to enjoy movies that come from places outside of their immediate awareness.  Among those seemingly insurmountable obstacles is the notion that at some point in the past, films were shot in . . . gasp . . . black and white!
