Flaming Lips Soundtrack a Movie About Mushrooms

All is suddenly right with the world.
Flaming Lips Soundtrack a Movie About Mushrooms

This is it, shroomers: your technicolor, unicorn-in-space prayers have been answered. There's a new indie movie called Know Your Mushrooms featuring soundtrack contributions by none other than the Flaming Lips. Artistic pairings do not get much more perfect than this.

I mean, what could be more apropos? A film about chaw scored by Kid Rock? A piercing look into the history of perms featuring original pieces from Nickelback? Maybe. But the Flaming Lips/mushrooms connection is very real and very now. Directed by Grass documentarian Ron Mann and featuring shroom-head Larry Evans aka "the Indiana Jones of Mushrooms," the film "opens the doors to perception, takes the audience on a longer, stranger trip and delivers them to a brave new world where the fungi might well guide humanity to a saner, safer place… with extra cheese…" according to its website.

Know Your Mushrooms premiered in December and is currently hitting the festival circuit and art houses in North America including screenings at SXSW March 14, Cinematheque Winnepeg March 13-15, and Vancouver's The Vancity April 3-6.

In celebration of the film, the Lips have put a brand new song from the movie called "Anything You Say Now I Believe You" on their MySpace. (The movie also features "The Wizard Turns On..." from At War with the Mystics and The Soft Bulletin's "What Is the Light?") The new track is trippy-- noticeably trippier than most of the Lips' recent material. Could this mark a return to their supreme headfuck psych days? Possibly. But one thing's for certain: If you've been saving some special fungi for "the right occasion," this movie is that occasion.
