About the Team:
The George Mason University Masonettes Dance Team was established in the fall of 1990. Over the years, the team has gone from a small group of dancers to a nationally ranked collegiate squad. Currently, the team is under the direction of Head Coach Michelle Chin and Advisor Jill Rodeffer.
The Masonettes dance at all home Women's and Men's Basketball games, as well as the CAA Basketball tournaments. They can also be seen at Mason events like Midnight Madness. In the past, the Masonettes have performed at Washington Wizards games and the Virginia Special Olympics Opening Ceremonies.
Several Masonettes alumni have gone on to dance professionally. Currently, we have former Masonettes on the NFL Redskins Cheerleading squad and the NBA Washington Wizards Dance Team. Many other alumni coach area high school and all-star dance teams.
National Competition:
The team competes annually at Universal Dance Association's National College Cheerleading and Dance Team Championship, held every January at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. They have placed in the top 10 of the Nation's best college dance teams every year for the past seven years. In the past, the Masonettes have appeared on espn2 during the competition special. This year, the team is currently ranked 5th in the Nation out of all Division I college dance teams.
Annual Mason Dance Team Invitational:
Each year, the Masonettes are proud to host the Mason Dance Team Invitational. This premier competition, which usually takes place in November or December, features all-star, junior high, JV and Varsity dance teams from all over the Washington Metropolitan area. First place team winners are invited to perform at a GMU basketball game. Look for more information about next year's Invitational soon!
Masonettes Tryouts:
Masonettes tryouts are usually held in mid to late April. They consist of a one-day clinic (jazz and hip hop combinations will be taught, we well as across the floor technique, etc.), an interview, and a formal tryout. After the team is selected, they practice at least twice a month over the summer, and then attend Universal Dance Association's College Dance Camp in the Northeast.
During the school year, practices are held 3 times a week during the regular season (September-November and January-February), and up to 6 days a week during competition season (December).
All current students are eligible to tryout, as well as incoming freshman that have already applied to GMU. More details will be available as tryouts approach.
