Frequently Asked Questions

What is the purpose of this site?
The original purpose of this site was to publish my online linguistic tools, the German-English Dictionary, the English Phonetic Transliterator, and the German HyperDictionary, created during my years of studying German at school. However, shortly after the website's inception, the content grew to include Professional Resources, Scientific Interests, and Perl Scripts and continues to grow still.

While all sections of the website are thirsty for more content, it is added not by plan but by whatever may be of interest at the time I sit down in front of my computer. Thus, the site grows as a random walk. I believe this has value in that the site's content is a temporal record of my immediate interests which ensures a unique and interesting collection of information.
Where do you live?
I live in San Francisco, California.
What software do you use to build and serve your website?
The webserver is a custom-compiled version of Apache 2, running Mason/Perl. The webserver is running on SuSE Linux 8.2 with the Linux 2.4.21 kernel. All webpages are a combination of dynamically interpreted Perl, HTML, and CSS. All content is written entirely by hand with vim. :wq Images are created and edited with both the gimp and Adobe Photoshop. FreeType? FreeType is for amateurs! ;)
What hardware does your website run on?
My server is a hand-assmebled AMD Athlon XP 1500+ with 385 MB of memory, and 164 GB of disk, behind a Linksys DSL firewall.
