Best. Gay. Week. Ever. (February 27, 2009)

27 February 2009 7:22 AM, PST

It's The Best.Gay.Week.Ever! But In Designer Clothes!

Oh, the irony of having me write a fashion-themed Bgwe! Why so ironic? How about because it's 5 Pm and I'm currently wearing Target slippers, Target lounge pants and a ratty sweathshirt. Did I mention these are my good clothes?

Not fair! I actually shower every single day! Mostly...

Why the sudden interest in fashion? Well, there was Fashion Week having taken place last week in New York and the Oscars in L.A. on Sunday, but I was really inspired by last week's episode of Ugly Betty which ended with Betty finally "getting" that fashion isn't just about expensive clothes but is actually "art" and about taking what's on the inside emotionally, spiritually, etc. and putting it on the outside.

I guess she's feeling wing-y on the inside?

I found that an interesting way to look at fashion and thusly

You Gotta Have Whaaaah?: Gyllenhaal and Carrey in "Damn Yankees"?

27 February 2009 6:30 AM, PST

Variety is reporting that two actors who get a lot of digital ink around these parts have been attached to the latest big-screen musical. The guys behind the recent Hairspray are looking to revive the 1950's classic Damn Yankees, and have attached Jake Gyllenhaal and Jim Carrey to the project as the male leads.

Carrey is a hot topic in these parts lately thanks to I Love You Phillip Morris (which is still ironing out distribution after its well-received Sundance premiere), where he plays a gay con man. And Gyllenhaal ... dammit, I know he was in some gay movie somewhere, I just can't remember ... Donnie Darko? No ... Bubble Boy? Eh, it'll come to me. Anyway, trust me, the gays love him!

Jakey-poo is set to star as Joe Boyd, a baseball player who sells his soul to the devil, played by Carrey.

I have a few thoughts on the casting: One,

Break out the bullwhips: The Robert Mapplethorpe bio-pic is coming

26 February 2009 10:02 AM, PST

Robert Mapplethorpe and Nate Dushku

Last month we told you that Dollhouse star Eliza Dushku was developing a biopic of artist Robert Mapplethorpe, and would star her brother Nate.

If, like me, you dismissed the briefs blurb as just another insane scribbling by our Blog Editor, you're in for a shock: it's true!

According to Variety, Dushku has secured the rights and received the full cooperation of the Mapplethorpe estate, and the film, called The Perfect Moment, "will chronicle Mapplethorpe's career from his rise to fame in the 1970s for his portraits of socialites and rock stars until his death in 1989 at age 42 from complications arising from AIDS."

Tapped to direct is documentarian Ondi Timoner, and most intriguing is the casting of Nate Dushku, for whom Eliza developed the film: "Nate physically has an uncanny resemblance to Robert," she said. "Some pictures are really eerie." (Interestingly, the "official" announcement of

Exclusive pics from Broadway's "Defying Inequality" concert

24 February 2009 5:47 PM, PST

No doubt inspired by the heartfelt pro-gay marriage remarks of Milk’s Sean Penn and Dustin Lance Black at Sunday's Academy Awards ceremony, members of the Broadway community gathered at the Gershwin Theatre on Monday, February 23 for Defying Inequality, a celebrity benefit concert for equal rights for the Glbt community.

The show began with a live performance of Marc Shaiman’s Prop. 8: The Musical, the video version of which has become an Internet phenomenon.

In addition to such Broadway stars as Nathan Lane, Harvey Fierstein, David Hyde Pierce, and Jane Fonda (who is soon to open in 33 Variations), the standing room only event featured impassioned speeches and appearances by Cyndi Lauper, Carson Kressley, Judy Gold, political pundit Keith Olbermann, Ugly Betty stars Michael Urie and Mark Indelicato, and a host of other notables, as well as performances by the casts of a dozen Broadway shows.

Defamer outs gay character on NBC's "Kings"

24 February 2009 10:09 AM, PST

Kings for a while now due in part to the fact that it includes a major gay character. We've actually seen the first four hours (which premiere March 15th) and I even chatted with Kings' creators about the show as well as the gay character with the understanding that we wouldn't reveal anything beforehand.

But thanks to Defamer.com that isn't a problem anymore although I still won't be saying which character is gay. So if you really want to have the fun taken out of that particular reveal, you can go read it here.

Frankly, I think it was really bad form of Defamer to post the info without so much as a spoiler warning. Most Internet users are sophisticated enough to know this info is often floating around out there, but with Defamer's post there is no warning at all. You start reading this post about a gay

Camptastic Britcom "Beautiful People" coming to the States this May

24 February 2009 7:51 AM, PST

Here's some great news for us folks Stateside: Logo (our parent company) has secured the rights to broadcast the first two seasons of the British comedy Beautiful People here in the States. The show is based on the memoirs of style icon Simon Doonan (also the husband of American superdesigner Jonathan Adler).

Set in the early '90s, the show tells the story of Simon's coming-of-age as a gay teenager in working-class Britain, and made a big splash with mainstream audiences when it premiered in the fall overseas. We've been dying to get a look at the show (being big fans of both Doonan and of the people behind the sitcom, who also brought us a little show called Absolutely Fabulous) and we're stoked that we'll all get the chance in the near-term.

Luke Ward-Wilkinson, Layton Williams, Sophie Ash, and Olivia Colman

How Proposition 8 nearly canceled tonight's same-sex wedding on "Privileged"

24 February 2009 5:57 AM, PST

Allan Louis and David Monahan

It’s a gay old affair on tonight’s episode of the CW series Privileged when gay characters Marco (Allan Louis) and Keith (David Monahan) are married in the season finale of the freshman series.

Creator and Executive Producer Rina Mimoun recently told AfterElton.com how the storyline was unfortunately sidetracked last November, and how gay-fave comic Kathy Griffin came to be involved in the big walk down the aisle:

I had no idea that Prop 8 would ever go this way so the whole time we were planning the story we were like, "We’ll do the wedding in La, which will be great because we can make it a location shoot here…" We were so convinced that No on 8 would be No, we were breaking the story as if it were a done deal. And then when it came back I was like "Oh my God,

Ask the Flying Monkey! (February 24, 2009)

23 February 2009 5:35 PM, PST

Have a question about gay male entertainment? Ask the Monkey! (Please include your city and state and/or country)

Q: It seems like Robert Pattinson is attempting to sabotage his own success by talking about his poor hygiene habits etc. Perhaps he is just being very honest, which is refreshing. However, I am curious about his sexual orientation. I have seen him with his friend Tom Sturridge, and they seem very close, but I get the feeling that he is being told by his agent and the Twilight machine not to "come out" since his fans are predominantly young females. Haven't we gotten past all that by now? – Eileen, Gainesville, Virginia

A: First, Pattinson is reportedly straight, having been romantically linked with Nina Schubert, Katie Leung, and Camilla Belle; Sturridge is merely his best friend. And actually, I believe him. Why? Because – as you say – he is so damn honest

Atwt video clip update: Vigil-ante up

23 February 2009 1:37 PM, PST

Today on As the World Turns, Casey tells Luke and Noah he suspects Matt of dealing drugs. Despite Noah's protests, they hatch a plan to use Jade to entrap Matt. Will it work?

Back at the Lilypad, Lily tells Holden about Luke's recent arrest for trespassing and his continued obsession with bringing Reg's killer to justice.  Holden hits the roof over his son's stupid vigilantism and hauls Luke to the police station so he and Noah can come clean to Margo.

If things weren't complicated enough, those drugs that Casey planted on Elwood finally resurface, but when they do it's not Elwood or Matt they incriminate.

To find out more, check out today's Nuke clips after the break:

Hey, if you missed it, be sure and check out Brian Juergens' liveblog for this episode. As always, you can find previous liveblogs, video clips and other goodies over on the Atwt Resource Page.

"Fame!": Meet the gay teen who wants to live forever, learn how to fly

23 February 2009 12:00 PM, PST

We've been eagerly anticipating news about the announced remake of the gay-inclusive let's-put-on-legwarmers-and-a-show classic Fame, which tells the story of aspiring jazz-handers in a New York City high school for the performing arts.

With the phenomenal success of the High School Musical movies, a reboot of Fame (which also had a run as a television show following the success of the 1980 feature) is a no-brainer. But given the Disney franchise's reluctance to acknowledge the fact that the gay kids love themselves some musical theater, we were nervous that the Fame remake would follow a similar path.

Thankfully, much like the original film (which featured gay teen Montgomery, played by Paul McCrane) the remake will feature a gay character in the central cast.

Paul McGill plays Kevin, a gay student whom the production tells us is a significant character in the ensemble. No

Gays of our Lives (February 23, 2009)

23 February 2009 1:22 AM, PST

Chatting With … Sri Rao

I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Sri Rao, the former head writer of last year’s best soap opera on either daytime or nighttime television, General Hospital: Night Shift. In addition to discussing his work on that gay-inclusive, critically acclaimed show, Rao also shared his thoughts on the depiction of gay characters in the genre, who should write gay characters, how As the World Turns handled the Luke and Noah storyline, as well as news about a new project very close to his heart.

[While very interesting and worthwhile, this interview is five pages long. To skip directly to this week's In My Humble Opinion, Gool Newsbeat and Scoops And Spoilers click here.]

Sri Rao

AfterElton.com: You were the head writer for General Hospital: Night Shift. Had you written for soaps before that?

Sri Rao: No, this was my first foray into the soap opera genre. I had been watching General Hospital for my entire life. I’m a long-time fan of the show so I was very familiar with it.

Gay night at the Oscars includes victorious "Milk"

23 February 2009 1:21 AM, PST

Gus Van Sant's Milk may not have won Best Picture, but tonight’s 81st annual Academy Awards ceremony included plenty of gay-related moments, the most satisfying of which may have been Sean Penn’s win for Best Actor for his acclaimed portrayal of slain gay rights activist Harvey Milk.

"You commie, homo-loving sons of guns!” Penn said in accepting the award.

Later, he referred to anti-gay protesters who had been picketing the streets of Sunset and Highland outside the theater, saying “For those who saw the signs of hatred as our cars drove in tonight, I think that it is a good time for those who voted for the ban against gay marriage to sit and reflect and anticipate their great shame, and the shame in their grandchildren's eyes if they continue that way of support. We've got to have equal rights for everyone!
