IFTAs International Jury Commends Irish Creative Talent

The voting for the 6th Annual Irish Film and Television Awards has come to a close with the winners of this year's Awards being voted for by a combination of the Ifta Academy and a selection of International Jury headed up by Oscar winning director Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings Trilogy, King Kong). he Jury is made up of Academy Voting Members across 14 different chapters of acting, writing, directing etc along with a selection of high profile industry experts from around the world who have cast their votes to decide the winners of this year's Irish Film and Television Awards - announced at the Awards Ceremony on February 14th next.

Morahan Joins Ballydung Duo 'Podge and Rodge'

TV presenter Caroline Morahan has been revealed as the new host of 'The Podge and Rodge Show' to begin presenting from next Monday night 9th February until the end of the show's run in April. Caroline previously joined the O'Leprosy brothers as their guest co-host before in late 2008 and has said; "I'm excited to be working with the boys. We had a riot doing the show together before Christmas."'The Podge and Rodge Show' is currently enjoying its fourth successful season on air with the show regularly attracting audiences of over 200,000 and has received an Ifta nomination in the Best Entertainment Category.

Canada's Strategic Partners Spotlight Ireland

The 29th Atlantic Film Festival and Canada's co production outfit Strategic Partners will host a special spotlight on co producing with Ireland and Germany during the festival, which runs from 18 – 20 September 2009 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Canada's singular international co-production market, will feature movies from around the world and across Canada, including a special stream of films from the spotlight countries of Ireland and Germany. The event will host 200 top industry players at the festival and aims to bring international delegates together with Canada's film and television players at it's co-production market, focusing on all genres of film and television, including those at an early stage and those looking for the right partner. As part of the festival which will feature movies from around the world and across Canada, there will be special stream of films from the spotlight countries of Ireland and Germany.

Two Nominations for Feature Doc 'Fight or Flight'

Ifta nominated feature documentary 'Fight or Flight', directed by Peter J McCarthy and Shan Sutton, has been nominated for Best Foreign Documentary at the Long Island Film Festival and is also one of the finalists for Best Documentary at the Beloit International Film Festival in Wisconsin running from 19th – 22nd February 2009. The premise for the film happened several years ago when director Peter McCarthy was assaulted by a gang while walking home from a night out. In this unprovoked attack, he received severe lacerations to his face and almost lost the sight in his left eye. The film is the story of self-discovery and spiritual healing and explores the issues of fear and violence and how a man deals with the aftermath of a personal attack.

Thaddeus O'Sullivan to Direct 'Obsession'

Irish director Thaddeus O'Sullivan (Ordinary Decent Criminal, December Bride) is being lined up to direct the new psychological thriller, 'Obsession' adapted from Alec Coppel's novel 'A Man About A Dog' by screenwriter Rob Green (House). The film involves a Manhattan based doctor who plots revenge against his wife's lover. Coppel's novel has already been adapted from the screen by Edward Dmytryk in 1949's 'The Hidden Room'. The new version will be produced by Think Tank Films with shooting scheduled to commence later in the year in Detroit and New York.

Shooting Begins On 'The Fading Light'

Principal photography has begun on the low budget feature film, 'The Fading Light', directed by Ivan Kavanagh (Tin Can Man) and produced by AnneMarie Naughton of Park Films. 'The Fading Light' centres on a dying woman who when is visited by her two daughters, long repressed family secrets, that have devastated their lives, rise to the surface. Ivan's previous film, 'Our Wonderful Home' is currently showing in the Dublin Film Festival. Ivan's previous film, 'Our Wonderful Home' is currently showing in the Dublin Film Festival. Dop for the shoot is Colin Downey who previously has worked with Kavanagh on 'Our Wonderful Home' and is shooting on the Red camera.

Magma Film's 'Niko' Tops Finnish Film Awards

Niko and the Way To The Stars,' the animated feature film co-produced by Magma Films in Galway and Anima Vitae in Finland, has won the Best Film and Best Script “Jussi” awards at the Finnish Film Awards in Helsinki. Galway based writer Marteinn Thorisson who wrote the screen play has been living and working in Galway for 12 years and has written on several international animation series and two other feature films produced by Magma. The awards are two of the most prestigious in the award categories and are all the more noteworthy as it is the first time a family genre animated feature has received these top awards which are normally the domain of live action films.

Jenn Murray Lands Role In 'The Day Of The Triffids'

Teen Irish actress Jenn Murray has landed a starring role in BBC One's latest drama 'The Day Of The Triffids' alongside screen veterans Vanessa Redgrave (Julia, Howard's End), Dougray Scott (Mission Impossible II, Desperate Houswives) and Joley Richardson (Nip/Tuck). 'The Day Of The Triffids' is adapted by Patrick Harbinson (ER, Law and Order), who has created a fast paced, futuristic and electrifying take on John Wyndham's 1951 novel, creating an unmissable television event. Belfast born Jenn is currently filming scenes for the two part 90 minute drama in the UK. The actress' breakout performance in the Irish drama 'Dorothy' earned her an Ifta nomination in the Best Actress in a Lead Role Film category

IFC Obtains Us Rights to 'The Escapist'

Parallel Film's co-produced feature 'The Escapist', directed by Rupert Wyatt and starring Brian Cox and Liam Cunningham, has been picked up by IFC Films for Us distribution. The Escapist' - a tense prison escape thriller was shot in Dublin for four weeks in 2007 in various locations including Connolly Station and Kilmainham Jail. Cox (Troy) plays Frank Perry, a lifer, who discovers that his estranged daughter is sick and develops a plan to escape in order to make peace with her. The film which has been nominated for a Best Film Award at this year's IFTAs also stars Joseph Fiennes (Shakespeare in Love), Irish actor Liam Cunningham (The Wind That Shakes The Barley)...

Data Protection Commissioner Launches Video Comp

To mark Europe Data Protection Day which took place on 28 January - the Data Protection Commissioner is launching the video competition – 'Private I, Public Eye' which aims to encourage debate and create awareness of data protection and privacy issues. The competition, which is being run in conjunction with Google, will post the winning entries on YouTube, where last year's winning video was viewed by nearly 40,000 people. In addition to having their creative work viewed by thousands on people on YouTube, a prize fund of €10,000 has been created with a first prize of €5,000. The competition is open to anyone over 13 years of age. A video on the theme 'Private I, Public Eye' must be submitted before the 30th of April to the Data Protection Commissioner's YouTube channel www.youtube.com/dataprotection. Last year's winning videos can be viewed on the channel.

Filmbase Short Shoots for the 'Moon'

Shooting has just completed on, 'Blood Coloured Moon', the first Filmbase/Rte short film to be shot on the much talked about Red format. Written by established playwright, Barry McKinley, the romantic comedy features Ronan Leahy (The Catalpa Rescue), Olga Wehrly (Speed Dating, The Clinic) and Frankie McCafferty (Middletown, Ballykissangel). Director Marc-Ivan O'Gorman, who's previous credits include the Fuji Film award-winning short 'Trick or Treat' and the feature 'Black Magic', is delighted with what he has to work with: 'This is as good a short script as you'll come across, we've managed to get a wonderful, experienced cast, and from what I've seen of the Red it is a stunning format'.

Irish and International Guests Visiting Jdiff

Irish actors Liam Neeson, James Nesbitt, Brendan Gleeson along with a host of international talent have been confirmed to attend the 2009 Jameson Dublin International Film Festival (12–22 February 2009). Liam Neeson and James Nesbitt have been confirmed to attend the screening of new feature 'Five Minutes of Heaven' along with the film's director Oliver Hirschbiegel (Downfall) on Saturday 21st. Colin Firth (Bridget Jone's Diary) will attend the screening of his new film 'Genova' on Friday 20th, while on Sunday 22nd, the Irish animated feature 'The Secret of Kells,' will be attended by Ifta nominated actor Brendan Gleeson (In Bruges) along with the animators from Cartoon Saloon. Irish director John Crowley will also be in attendance at the festival as two of his films the BAFTA winning 'Boy A' and 'Is There Any Body There?' starring Michael Caine are to screen.

Brown Bag's 'Olivia' Airs on Nickelodeon

Irish animation company Brown Bag Films has completed a 52 part CGI animation series 'Olivia' for leading family entertainment company Chorion. The series has started to air weekdays at 11.30am on Nickelodeon in the Us. Based on the award-winning books written and illustrated by Ian Falconer which have sold six million copies worldwide in 20 languages, 'Olivia' is composed of 52 x 11 minute episodes which will begin airing on over 20 leading broadcasters around the world from Spring 2009. 'Olivia' is a six year old dynamo who believes she can do anything and sees every day as an opportunity to try new things. Her vivid imagination takes her on grand adventures, both real and fantasy, and like all children, her antics occasionally result in endearing misadventures.
