Interview

Gemma Bissix

Gemma Bissix

21.02.2008

We caught up with Gemma to ask her some of your questions about her return to Walford.

Thank you to everyone who sent in questions for Gemma. We put some of them to her when met up at the EastEnders studios.

Val asked: What made you come back to EastEnders, and are you glad you did?

Young Clare

To be able to reprise the role of Clare, who I played when I was a child, is such a great complement. It’s fantastic to grab something that once was and try and develop it into something different. I’m loving every minute.

Meg asked: What’s it like returning to the EastEnders set after ten years?

There’s a police station now, which there wasn’t before, but everything else is the same. Also, the people who were runners before are production managers and directors.

Andie asked: What do you think has changed Clare since she left the Square?

Ian and Clare

I think it’s just the fact that she’s lonely. When she was in Scotland Nigel and Julie were getting on with their own thing. Through no fault of Nigel’s she just got pushed out of the family. She’s not his real child, her mum’s dead and her dad was in prison and is a bit of a wrong un.

She went to university and was mistreated by a few men. Now she uses her looks to her advantage. Now she’s using the men and treating them badly.

Martha asked: Did you enjoy playing a baddie in Hollyoaks, and are you going to cause all that grief again, now you’re in EastEnders?

Clare

I loved every minute of playing a baddie, because you’re so far away from yourself. As for this character, I don’t think she’s going to be as evil as Clare in Hollyoaks . She’s not a murderer, she’s a man-eater. She doesn’t care who she knocks over to get to where she wants. She wants a sugar daddy, but I don’t think she’d kill to get there.

Josh asked: Who would you choose as a date for Clare: Steven, Sean or Mickey?

None of them have money, have they? I think, of them, Mickey because she goes for people that she can control and manipulate. Sean’s a bit tasty, she probably would like a bit of Sean, but at the same time he’s too clever, he’s too much in the game. She doesn’t want the challenge; she just wants an easy ride.

Caroline asked: Which Walford man do you think Clare will get, and which would you like to see her with?

Clare and Bradley

I think she’s going to make a beeline for Bradley. He’ll get a new job and once he’s got his money flowing she’ll be going for him. I’m not sure how long that will last though.

Tell you what would be quite funny - what about Ricky when he comes back? He’ll have a little bit of wealth and a new fiancee. Clare could be a twist in that tale.

Hannah asked: Are you anything like your character in real life?

My dad says there’s no acting involved what-so-ever, but he’s only joking. I’m definitely not like my character at all. I’ve been single three years - I’m not a man-eater. I think the only similarity between us is that Clare does a lot of things for her own amusement. I’m quite like that except I’ll just tell a joke or dance or the spot or something, and laugh at myself.

Cian asked: What's it like working with Tiana Benjamin?

Clare, Chelsea and Mo

Tiana’s lovely. We say our characters are frenemies because they’re both friends and enemies. She’s shown me the ropes and has really made me feel completely welcome. The whole young cast are fantastic and it really is true that we stick together and help each other out.

Bazz asked: Clare often crosses her arms across her chest when she's talking to another character. Is she confrontational or arrogant?

The reason I do it is because she’s very closed off. I don’t think she’s arrogant but she is confrontational. She’s holding her own space and being quite stern. It’s her sort of saying: "Don’t mess. Back off."

Jamie asked: As Holby's made in the same place as EastEnders, have you met up with Paul Bradley, who played your stepdad Nigel?

Paul Bradley as Nigel

On my first day back at EastEnders , my mum came in with me because she used to chaperone me, so it was like an historical moment. The three of us met up in the canteen and had lunch together. How lovely is that? It was like déjà vu.

Hannah asked: What sort of storyline would you like Clare to have in the future?

Maybe Clare and Chelsea could start up their own escort agency? Or Clare marries Ricky and they take over Walford!
