Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia was concluded on February 24, 1976 among the founding members of ASEAN.[1] The other ASEAN members acceded to the treaty upon or before joining ASEAN. The treaty was amended by a protocol on December 15, 1987 to open it for accession by states outside Southeast Asia[2], and again on July 25, 1998 to condition such accession on the consent of all ASEAN members[3]. As of February 2009[update], fifteen non-ASEAN countries have acceded to the treaty. On February 18, 2009, United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced that the United States would pursue accession to the treaty.[4] The European Union intends to accede to the treaty as soon as it is amended to allow for the accession of non-states.[5][6][7]
The United Nations General Assembly has endorsed "the purposes and principles of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in South-East Asia and its provisions for the pacific settlement of regional disputes and for regional cooperation in order to achieve peace, amity and friendship among the peoples of South-East Asia, in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations".[8]
