Bears talk to offensive tackles at combine

By Vaughn McClure

INDIANAPOLIS -- With John Tait set to retire and John St. Clair possibly bound for the free-agent market, the Bears need to dissect the tackles in this year's draft class. Michael Oher appears to be on their list.

Oher (6-4, 309), from Mississippi, said he had an extended meeting with the Bears on Wednesday night. Coaches and scouts are here for the NFL Scouting Combine.

"I think it went really well," Oher said of the meeting. "We talked for a long time. We talked about plays, technique, the things that they run up there."

Oher is a projected first-rounder, and the Bears own the No. 18 overall pick. Chris Williams, last year's first-round pick, is expected to start at left tackle. The uncertainty with St. Clair and the impending retirement of Tait could create an immediate hole at right tackle.

"I think I can play left and right," Oher said. "I can't argue about what position I want to play. I'm just glad to be getting an opportunity to play in the NFL."

Oher's life before college was documented in a book called "The Blind Side: Evolution of the Game." He grew up without a father and his mother was addicted to crack cocaine.

"I grew up poor," the Memphis native said. "Homeless a lot. I just worked hard, came through a lot of adversity. I was taken in by a family that helped me get to college and pushed me. That's why I think I'm here today."

Tackle Phil Loadholt (6-7, 343) from Oklahoma also said he spoke with the Bears on Wednesday night. He is willing to play both tackle spots as well.

Oher is a monster. A few months ago he was projected as the best OT in the draft, he would be great at RT for the Bears. They would have two studs at either end for the next 8-9 years.

If Jermey Maclin is off the board when we pick, i think this is a great pick. We would have to young OTs on the o-line for ten years. And if there is no dynamic playmaker avaliable, you have to have great lines in the NFL to win. I don't wanna see Percy Harvin, just like Hester. Lots of speed, but not a true gamechanging wide receiver.!!! Go Bears.

Loadholt---Loadholt---Loadholt!!!!!!!!!!
This is the guy the Bears need on the right side of that line. Oversized, super strong, full of attitude!!! When the second half of the season arrives in Chicago this is the type of O-lineman that truely plows the road in bad/cold weather. Frankly this is the type of guy they need across that line, not the undersized guys they have now i.e. Beekman, and Garza

Umm......can they run a cross route or a 40 yard pass from Orton?

Here's hoping the Bears go after a tackle on day one of the draft. I for one wouldn't be opposed to the idea of the Bears getting any O-Lineman on day one. OT or even Alex Mack the center from Cal. If he doesn't work out at center then you can move him to guard.

Bears 2009 Draft picks should really consider these fine players.

Rey Maugluga LB
Ian Johnson RB
Jeremy Childs WR
Taylor Mays Jr S

Three options for DE
Brian Urakpo
Klye Moore
Paul Kruger

Three options for DL
B.J. Raji
Fili Moala
Ra Shon Harris

These players are very good for key position in need and great draft picks without costing too much.

QB position is still to come. I Hope da bears do NOT consider Simms and Garcia. Da bears SHOULD have been developing a QB for the past three years. It's time to move on and get a QB for the future.

Go Bears.

Which player is a big talent, yet has a medical red flag?

That is Jerry's specialty.

Taylor Mays is a great player but he's not coming out until 2010.

Liberty has a rb Rasheed that if he's there in the third go for it but the first two rounds should be very large offensive linemen, if Herman Johnson is around in later rounds he should be considered also. This is the year to stockpile linemen and fix Angelo's previous oversights.

Loadholt is late1st/ 2nd rd T -good feet possible swing LT in a pinch but not at #18. Any of these would make me happy:OL-Ohler-mauler/Smith if he falls!/Mack, LB - Maugluga unlikely/ Laurinaitis may drop bad 40x he's a FOOTBALL PLAYER! DB-Jenkins/Davis, WR-Maclin / Heyward-Bey. Any these guys #18
Bears missed the boat by not stockpiling picks this yr instead of last:Deep crop of OL, solid WR, Big drop off top: DL, LB, CB, S. A RB in mid/late rounds yes & upgrade FB w/ McKie doen't blow-up LB's! And can we please draft a QB! Every year! Sid Luckman our record holder still!! WTF!
