New Trier girls top St. Viator at Waukegan golf sectional

Just like their male counterparts, the St. Viator and New Trier girls golf teams took the top two spots in their sectional Monday.

The big difference was that while St. Viator earned top honors for the boys, the Trevians shot a 324 to finish first at the Class 2A Waukegan sectional at Bonnie Brook golf course.

Alice Kang and Elizabeth Szokol both shot 79 to lead a balanced New Trier team. Kaela Klune's even par 72 paced St. Viator, whose 336 just edged out a couple of strong teams in Stevenson (338) and Prospect (339). Medalist Kris Yoo of Conant (72) won a tiebreaker with Klune.

At St. Charles East, Wheaton Warrenville South (321) and the host Saints (326) earned the two qualifying spots at St. Andrew's Golf Club. Sara Skurla (77) led the Tigers, and Jenny Niemiec also shot a 77 to lead the Saints. Samantha Postillion of Hinsdale Central was the medalist with a 1-under 70, but her Red Devils missed qualifying as a team by one stroke.

In Class 1A, Gigi DiGrazia of Driscoll trounced the field with a 5-under 65 at the Lena-Winslow sectional at Wolf Hollow Golf Club, finishing five strokes ahead of the next golfer. Rockford Lutheran (340) and Shabbona Indian Creek (358) advanced as teams.
