9 Apr: Stumbling and Fumbling over the Implementation of the Responsibility to Protect: The Darfur Debacle: The humanitarian emergency in Darfur continues to challenge the United Nation’s responsibility to protect (R2P) vulnerable populations. Darfur’s challenge to the collective will of the world body far exceeds other challenges posed by the rise in international crime, and perceptions about the threat posed to international security by ‘non-conforming’ states like Iran and North Korea.
African organisations have played an important role in the struggle for independence on the African continent. Organisations like the Organisation for African Union (OAU) is an example of one of these organisations that worked for a united Africa against the powers of colonialism. Today almost the whole of Africa is independent but still struggles with problems like poverty and development.
In an attempt to deal with these socio economic issues that plague the continent various other African organisations has emerged as key players in the development of the continent. Regional Economic Communities (RECs) in collaboration with the African Union (AU) and organs of the AU like the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD), the Pan-African Parliament (PAP), African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) and the AU’s Economic, Social and Cultural Council (ECCOSOC) are some of the most important organisations contributing to struggle for a peaceful and prosperous Africa.
The Institute for Security Studies provides analysis on human security issues related to the work of these African organisations. The ISS also provide technical support for policy development and implementation to these organisations, particularly on peace and security matters.
