The All-Ireland_Hurling_Final was won by Cork who beat Kilkenny by 3-9 to 1-10. ==Format== The All-Ireland Championship was run on a provincial basis as usual. Galway, who faced no competition in Connacht, played in the Munster Championship. The Leinster Championship was run off as usual while the Ulster Championship remained suspended. As a result of this, the Munster and Leinster champions automatically qualified for the All-Ireland final. ==All-Ireland_Hurling_Final== Sunday September_4th was the date of the 1966 All-Ireland_Hurling_Final between the reigning champions Cork and Kilkenny. It was Cork's first appearance in a final in ten years and they were firm underdogs compared to an experiened Kilkenny side. In the build-up to the game their was speculation in the Cork camp that Christy_Ring, at the age of 45, would come out of retirement to play on the Cork team. While many saw it as an impossibility that Ring would play or even by named as a substitute, many more were determined that he play. In the end he didn't play, and one of the youngest Cork teams of all-time lined out. The majority of the Cork team had no Croke_Park experience, while their captain, Gerald_McCarthy, was still and under-21 player. The weather on the day featured showers before and during the match, as well as a strong breeze blowing up towards Hill 16. In the first half Cork played against the wind, doing a tremendous job in frustrating the Kilkenny forwards. Paddy Barry, the Cork goalkeeper, made two great saves in the first half and was on top form. Cork were dominating Kilknney all over the park, especially in midfield and in the half-forward line. In the 21st minute Cork found the back of the net for the first time when Colm_Sheehan caught the sliothar as it rebounded off the crossbar and crashed it into the net. At half-time the score was Kilkenny 0-7, Cork 1-2. Cork's second point was a Charlie McCarthy ground shot that flew over the bar. As the second half goyt underway Cork levelled the score, before Colm Sheehan took a pass from John Bennett and scored his second goal of the day. Cork's third goal of the day was scored by John_O'Halloran. A late Kilkenny goal by Tom Walsh was too little too late for the men in black and amber, as Seánie Barry and John Bennett put the icing on the cake for Cork. Cork had come from nowhere to win their first All-Ireland title in twelve years. ==All-Ireland_Senior_Hurling_Championship== {{footballbox | date = September_4
