- January 3: Andy Murray wins the 2009 Capitala World Tennis Championship, beating Rafael Nadal in the final
- January 4: Phil Taylor wins the PDC World Championship in darts, beating Raymond van Barneveld 7-1 in the final
- January 6: Wolfgang Loitzl wins the 2008/2009 Four Hills Tournament
- January 8: The Florida Gators win the 2009 BCS National Championship Game in Miami, FL.
- January 10: Andy Murray retains his title at the Qatar Open in Doha, beating Andy Roddick for his second title in a week. Radek Štepánek and Marin Cilic win at Brisbane and Chennai respectively. Victoria Azarenka takes the women's title in Brisbane and Elena Dementieva wins in Auckland.
- February 14: Manchester, England - New Super League club Celtic Crusaders play their first ever match: a 16 - 28 loss to Salford City Reds at The Willows before 4,026 as Super League XIV commences the first of 24 rounds.
- January 25: Organizing country Sweden wins the Bandy World Championship 2009 in Västerås, Sweden after beating Russia

- February 1: The Pittsburgh Steelers defeat the Arizona Cardinals 27-23 in Super Bowl XLIII.
- February 1: Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps issues an apology admitting he smoked marijuana, as it is shown on a photograph which British newspaper published.[1]
- February 1: France defeat the Croatia 24-19 in 2009 World Men's Handball Championship.
- February 8: Czech female skater Martina Sáblíková and Dutch male skater Sven Kramer win the 2009 World Allround Speed Skating Championships in Hamar.[2]
- February 15: West defeats East in the 2009 NBA All-Star Game. MVP was awarded to Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal
- February 15: Matt Kenseth wins the 51st annual Daytona 500.
- February 17: Alex Rodriguez, Major League Baseball player, admits to using performance-enhancing drugs.[3]

- March 3: Five members of the Sri Lanka national cricket team are injured when their team bus is attacked by masked gunmen en route to Day 3 of their second Test against Pakistan in Lahore. Their tour is cancelled following the attack.
