[edit] Family

Part of his ancestry stems from Achlada (Greek: Αχλάδα; Macedonian Slavic: Крушоради, Krušoradi),[1] a village in the Meliti municipality of the Florina Prefecture, Greece, where his family had the surname Grouios (Γρούϊος).[1] His paternal grandfather, Nikolaos Grouios (Greek: Νικόλαος Γρούϊος, c. 1911 - 1940),[1] fought as a soldier of the Hellenic Army during the Greco-Italian War. He was wounded in battle and died in a military hospital on 19 November 1940. His name is listed in the war memorial of Achlada alongside those of villagers killed in the Balkan Wars, the Greco-Turkish War of 1919-1922 and World War II. [2] [3]

Elder villagers of Achlada report that the villages of Florina Prefecture harbored members of the Greek People's Liberation Army during the Axis occupation of Greece and the Democratic Army of Greece during the Greek Civil War. In the ending days of the Greek Civil War rumors spead among the local population that the Hellenic Army would burn down their villages. Several of them fled to the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Among them was the widow of Grouios and three of their children. [2] [4]

One of the children would grow to become Gruevski's father. His wife was an ethnic Macedonian. Following their divorce, Gruevski was raised by his mother. The villagers of Achlada hold her responsible for Gruevski disregarding his paternal ancestry, which they consider to be Greek. [2] [5] On the other hand Gruevski is considered an "Aegean Macedonian" in the Republic of Macedonia, an ethnic Macedonian originating in Greek Macedonia.

[edit] Minister of Finance

Among Gruevski's achievements as Minister of Finance was the privatisation of Fenimak. The government under Ljubčo Georgievski sold the Macedonian Telecom to Hungarian Matav. Gruevski also implemented financial reforms, including the value added tax of 18%, requiring fiscal receipts for all Macedonian businesses, which was a program designed to fight tax evasion. His most famous program was "Купувајте Македонски Производи" ("Buy Macedonian Products"), which promoted buying Macedonian products, designated by logo with a sun with a happy face. His hope was that the program would boost domestic businesses.

[edit] Party leader

After VMRO-DPMNE was defeated in the Macedonian parliamentary election, 2002, there was a period of infighting within the party. Gruevski emerged as the pro-EU leader, and was elected as a leader of the party, after Ljubčo Georgievski left the position. The former prime minister set up his own party (VMRO-People's Party), but VMRO-DPMNE retained most of the party's supporters.

The VMRO-DPMNE won the Macedonian parliamentary election, 2006. On August 25 he constituted the new government. His government has many new faces, mostly in their 30s in key ministries and other positions. He was the first to incorporate Macedonian expatriates from various worldwide positions as CEO's in his new government.

In June 2007, he attended a meeting in Tirana, Albania along with U.S President George W. Bush, President of the United States, Sali Berisha, Prime Minister of Albania and Ivo Sanader, Prime Minister of Croatia.

On 1 June 2008, the coalition led by his party VMRO-DPMNE won Macedonian parliamentary election, 2008, their second electoral victory in a row, winning more than half of the seats in the parliament. [6] The polling was marred by a number of violent incidents and allegations of fraud in some ethnic Albanian dominated municipalities. He created a government with the Democratic Union for Integration. [7]
