[edit] Task Forces
[edit] Guidelines
[edit] Article names
The name of the article should be the current, formal title of the place. Other accepted names can be indicated in the first sentence with bold text. If the article name differs from the NRHP name, the NRHP name should usually appear as one of those bolded alternative names. If the article includes a NRHP infobox (usually helpful), then the NRHP name should appear as the title of the NRHP infobox. If there are multiple places with the same name, the article usually should be entitled Name (City, State).
- For example, Stacy's Tavern or Magnolia Manor (Cairo, Illinois).
However, in the county or state list of NRHPs, the NRHP name for the site should be used. If the article name is different, then this NRHP name needs to be pipelinked and/or to point to a redirect to the correct article name.
[edit] Wikilinks
- All the separate lists for each state or territory need to have their blue links checked, to make sure they are linked to unique articles. Disambiguation is required for a number of articles, especially common names for the local "Post Office" and train stations or churches. Make use of piped links for an existing article with a different name than the title that appears on the NRHP.
- Click on a red link that appears on the list. From the resulting page, "search for the article in Wikipedia" to possibly locate an existing article with a different name about the building or place. The name on the list should match the name on the NRHP database - with corrected spelling, as required (Refer to: Other useful links, below). Use a piped link from the existing article name to the redlink on the list. In this way, the Palmer-Perkins House (Boundary Increase) will be linked directly to the Palmer-Perkins House article, for example.

[edit] NHL articles by State
The purpose of this manual tabulation is to track and encourage development of NHL articles, listed in state-specific liss of NHLs themselves listed at List of National Historic Landmarks by state.
- Every NHL deserves an article.
- Certainly each should get a photo or other image.
- NRHP infoboxes are suitable for most but perhaps not all. Some articles already have another infobox type, it may or may not be helpful to add a NRHP infobox. However NRHP infobox often can be added below another infobox, perhaps with only key fields filled out.
- NRHP infoboxes now can separately include NHL designation date as a field.
- Almost every NHL article can include a link to the National Park Service summary about that NHL, for example [NHL link for Mar-A-Lago site]. To be excluded only if the NHL summary is not available. The count indicates number of links.
- For many NHLs, the National Park Service has a PDF copy of the text of the site's nomination for NHL status, or an "Inventory/Registration" form. This can be linked from the article. See [NRHP text PDF link example for Mar-A-Lago]. The count indicates number of links.
- For almost as many NHLs, there is also a PDF of photographs accompanying the site's nomination or inventory/registration. For example, see [NRHP photos PDF link for Mar-A-Lago]. The count indicates number of links.

Reviews done...no guarantees that I didn't miss something, but here's a list to start with! Lvklock
- Wow! I know how much it is to take Alaska and Hawaii into a better state, my head hurts at how many you've reviewed. dm (talk) 20:29, 3 July 2008 (UTC)
Following no longer tallies photos which are covered in similar list NHL photos instead.
The Massachusetts list needs major fixup, is one of few not started from table report including coordinates. In process now. First working on newly separated List of NHLs in Boston. Table reports mostly merged, coordinates added. Open for others to edit as they like.
Sanfranman59 fixed up date formatting using date-sortable DTS2 format in 33 area lists having day-dates. Besides MA the others show just year, and for these it is also likely that the dates have not been verified, and may reflect year of NRHP listing not NHL designation as needed. So verification/correction/day-date adding from the NPS NHL_list PDF document is needed, for 20 area lists:
While going thru the NPS NHL_list, confirm/fix names showing to be the NHL program name for site.

Without NHLsum, there is no documentation of the NHL name of the site, which needs also to be mentioned as alternative name in intro. --Doncram |

[edit] Lists of NRHP listings and basic facts about them
Lists of NRHP listings are available, organized by state and county, within List of National Register of Historic Places entries. For example, National Register of Historic Places listings in Onondaga County, New York is one list with pictures for some of the entries. Almost all of the 79,000 NRHP listings in the U.S. are probably listed on one of these lists, thanks to continued efforts of WP:NRHP members, but the majority of the NRHP sites are "red-links" with no articles yet. (About 1600 of the 2400 or so NRHPs that are also National Historic Landmarks have blue-links already.)
To find address lists for NRHP listings in a given area, it may sometimes be easiest to work with data available from NationalRegisterOfHistoricPlaces.Com, a commercial site that serves up some of the public domain data from the NRIS system. For example, see NRHP.COM's List of NRHP listings in Onondaga County, New York. You can change the state and county name in the URL to one you are interested in. Each county report from this source contains a separate tab for the Historic Districts within the county, in which it provides useful numbers of contributing and non-contributing elements in each district.
The same information should be available from the National Register information system (NRIS), available here (to be added), but getting to the right screens to get all of the same data is not easy to figure out. To perform a name search, try here (to be added). To perform an architect search, try here (to be added). It is particularly not clear how to identify whether a given NRHP listing is a historic district vs. a building, site, structure, or object. (Using either the NRHP.COM site or the Elkman infobox generator, one can ascertain, somewhat indirectly, only whether or not a site is a historic district.)
Every Friday, the National Park Service publishes the Weekly Update, which includes all actions on the National Register for the prior week(s): additions; removals; boundary increases and decreases; additional documentation; approvals of multiple covers (MPS); determinations of eligibility; and designations of NHLs. The Weekly Update can be found here. Since July 2008, the weekly update has included one featured listing. These are listed at National Register of Historic Places featured properties and districts.
[edit] Elkman NRHP infobox generator
For editing new articles on NRHPs, there's a useful tool created and maintained by Elkman, a WP:NRHP member. This is the Elkman NRHP infobox generator, which creates the NRHP infobox for a new page, which you cut and paste into your new article. It serves up data from one big download of NRIS data that was performed on January 23, 2007. The January 23 date should be left in the footnote reference provided as part of its output.
Also, the new Elkman county list table generator creates a wikitable in the new/evolving format of NRHP list-tables.
[edit] Official text and photo documents
Official sources available for many NRHP sites include the NRHP text document, the corresponding NRHP photos document, and, in some states, correspondence between owners and the state and/or Federal offices involved in listing. The NRHP text document may be labelled a NRHP Registration form, or it may be labelled a NRHP Inventory/Nomination form. For NRHPs that are also National Historic Landmarks, there may be a National Historic Landmark Nomination form instead of, or in addition to, the NRHP text document. The photos are black and white. These are the official, definitive sources on some aspects of NHL sites. For example they contain official descriptions of the area which is included in the landmark, which might not be available anywhere else.
[edit] NRHP text document
- For National Historic Landmarks, especially, the National Park Service's NPS Focus search site is a good place to start. It provides access to the original text description and photos of most NRHPS that are also National Historic Landmark sites, for most or all sites that are also National Historic Sites, and for some NRHPs that are neither.
Some states provide scanned copies for all of their NRHPs.
For NRHPs where a complete scanned version of the NRHP text and photos is not available on-line somewhere, the Reference Desk of the National Register of Historic Places will provide a photocopied hard copy, to be sent out by postal mail, upon request.
[edit] National Park Service Inventory
The National Park Service has an inventory of historic park structures with pictures here.
[edit] GSA database
Multiple resources regarding historic federal government buildings under General Services Administration management may be found at Historic Buildings, which can be searched and sorted by state, architect, and other attributes.
[edit] State specific sources
- For Arkansas, it is possible to visit the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program in person and make copies of NRHP nomination forms and other documents.
- For California, an index linking to concise site summaries may be found at the California Office of Historic Preservation. Includes NRHP and California state registry sites, but the written summaries are proceeding alphabetically and haven't made it past Alpine County. Beachcalifornia.com has summaries of state historical landmarks, including NRHP properties..
- For Colorado:
- an index linking to concise site summaries may be found at Colorado Historical Society. Includes NRHP and Colorado state registry sites. Complete
- There are PDF copies of some or all of the NRHP Registration documents available on-line.
E.g., for East High School (Denver), there is thisNational Register of Historic Places Continuation Sheet. Searching on "East High School" at this search screen finds that one. Is there an open index / main directory to view all of the available PDF's somewhere?
-
- A list of all the removals is here
- For Illinois, http://gis.hpa.state.il.us/hargis/ a state office provides scanned copies of the NRHP text documents]. To find a property, it takes some blundering around with the query system there.
- To search, try this: at the right, click on "Query Builder", opens a new window. For "Field name", select "Property name" from the drop-down menu. Enter part or all of the name you want to find, then click "Add". Then click "Finish". There may be no noticeable effect, you may still have the same display before you, perhaps a map. But scroll down, at the bottom now there should be some text now about your property, including a link "Report".
- Hopefully you can somehow get to a screen that includes a link "Report" about the property you want. If you click on that a new window with "PROPERTY INFORMATION REPORT" opens; in that window scroll down to "Surveys of Property" section, and select "View Background Documentation", which should link to the NRHP Inventory/Nomination report for the site. At the point where you are selecting that, you can see and record a direct URL to the PDF, something like http://gis.hpa.state.il.us/hargis/PDFs/200181.pdf.
- Note other screens may include a photo and other useful information.
- For Indiana, it is the State Dept. of Natural Resources' Division of Historic Preservation & Archaeology which governs. See http://www.in.gov/dnr/historic/10796.htm for some of their links.
- PDFs of National Register applications are available through the Indiana State Historic Architectural and Archaeological Research Database (SHAARD) system. At https://secure.in.gov/apps/dnr/shaard/welcome.html, select "Enter as a guest". For "Survey type", select pull-down option "National Register", then get to a search screen where you can find properties by county or tite of property (in the "Historic name" field). How does one link directly to a PDF file that is found this way, though?
- Currently pending, and recent previous, applications for NRHP status are available at http://www.in.gov/dnr/historic/11841.htm, and here the PDFs are directly linkable.
- For Louisiana, http://www.crt.state.la.us/hp/nhl/searchby.asp Louisiana NRHP documents are searchable here and include PDF links
- For Maryland, at http://www.marylandhistoricaltrust.net/NR/ a Maryland Historical Trust searchable website provides fairly extensive information for each NRHP
- For Massachusetts, at http://mhc-macris.net/ is the Massachusetts Cultural Resources Information System (MACRIS)], the state's database of NRHP and state historic sites. As of 2/2009 it does not yet link to NRHP or other nomination documents.
- For Minnesota, there is a 2003 book The National Register of Historic Places in Minnesota by Mary Ann Nord available.[1]
- ^ Nord, Mary Ann (2003). The National Register of Historic Places in Minnesota. Minnesota Historical Society. ISBN 0-87351-448-3.
- For Missouri, NRHP applications are on-line, as in external link within Arthur W. and Chloe B. Cole House. See http://www.dnr.mo.gov/shpo/national.htm for Missouri NRHP info. Where is the index to documents, though? this site may be where they should be accessible, but as of June 2008 this is under construction.
- For Nebraska, an index linking to concise site summaries may be found at Nebraska State Historical Society.
- For Nevada, at http://dmla.clan.lib.nv.us/DOCS/shpo/ the State Historic Preservation Office provides lists of the NRHPs and of Nevada state historic sites which provide some location information that is additional to what is available in the NRIS system.
- For New York State, the NYS Office of Recreation, Parks and Historic Preservation (NYSORPHP) provides scanned versions of the NRHP text documents, NRHP photos, and NRHP correspondence with owners of properties. The interface requires Javascript on your computer. In the New York's State and National Registers of Historic Places Document Imaging Project search access screen, you have to select "Basic" and enter Basic criteria such as name "Grahamsville" and county "Sullivan" in the search form, and then click over on the right at RESULTS to get the search to run. Not entirely intuitive. It may be then that a javascript icon shows up for a while, and then you typically get a list of the 3 documents available (text, photos, other). Then clicking on one of them, in Firefox at least, you get a new browser window with a wide but short scrollable window showing about one vertical inch of the scanned document. You can then choose to click on the printer icon and print to a PDF file, in order to save it on your computer and to read it more conveniently. (If you do not already have a PDF writer on your computer, you can download a free one at www.pdf995.com). The new browser window shows a hard URL that can be used provide a hard link from a wikipedia article to a specific file, such as Grahamsville Historic District NRHP text for the article Grahamsville Historic District. See wp:NRHPMOS for an example footnote reference linking the separate text, photos, and correspondence documents for one site.
- For Oregon the Oregon Historic Sites Database is under development, and is stated to eventually include copies of NRHP documents. At present it is very limited in content.
- For Pennsylvania, the state office's ARCH system provides scanned copies of NRHP documents. In at least some cases such as for Northumberland Historic District, the scanning is incomplete (deliberately?). See wp:NRHPMOS for an example comprehensive footnote reference.
- For South Carolina, the South Carolina Department of Archives and History provides summaries, photos, and scanned PDF files of NRHP nominations for all NRHPs.
- For Tennessee, the state's Department of Environment and Conservation provides NRHP docs for at least some NRHP sites on-line, for example these 12 recent ones here. Also there is a "Tennessee Encyclopedia on History and Culture" on-line, search here sponsored by the Tennessee Historical Society, which has articles worth linking.
- For Texas, summary information and perhaps the text from the NRHP documents (but incomplete, clearly lacking sections), is available for NRHPs in the Texas Historical Commission's THC Atlas system. Also, the Handbook of Texas [100] provides summaries and some detailed histories of historic sites. Note in citing Handbook of Texas, most articles have individual authors to credit; the Fort Concho wikipedia article contains an example footnote reference giving such credit.
- For Virginia, VLR and NRHP nomination PDFs and other materials are available, by county and independent city, at the Virginia Landmarks Registry here.
- For West Virginia the West Virginia Division of Culture and History provides scanned PDFs of applications sorted by county.
- For Wyoming the Wyoming State Historic Preservation Office provides summaries of each site.
[edit] Multiple Property Submission (MPS) documents
PDFs of Multiple Property Submission documents are available from the National Register Information System (from the Main Menu, click on Documentation, then click on Multiple Covers(Historic Context)).
[edit] National Historic Landmark additional information
The National Park Services NHL search site provides access to a webpage summary for every NHL site, including for archeological sites where the NRHP text is not made available. This often including short statement of significance of site based on the NRHP text. The NHL webpage sometimes also includes current and past status information for sites that are threatened.
This NHL webpage summary is usually authoritative on the NHL name for the site, which may differ from the NRHP name for the site shown in the NRIS system. When an NRHP site is also a NHL, the NHL name should usually override the NRHP name in the NRHP infobox of an article on the site. However, awkwardly wrapped names such as "McKinley, James, House" should be unwrapped to "James McKinley House". Alternative names for a site should appear in the beginning text of the article.
This NHL webpage summary is usually authoritative on date of NHL designation, which may be manually added into the NRHP infobox generated by the Elkman infobox generator. However, there exist errors in this webpage system, which may extend to dates. Some of the errors have been reported to the National Park Service and are under review. A working list of some known or apparent errors with names of sites appears here. A similar list of issues with dates of NHL designation appears here.
[edit] Other Sources
The Historic American Buildings Survey and the Historic American Engineering Record provides photos and sometimes substantial text records for many sites that are NRHPs.
Locations of NRHPs in Kentucky in Indiana are pinpointed at http://www.metromapper.org/index-historic.php.

[edit] Infoboxes
- {{Infobox nrhp}} - for all articles, except in the following instances:
- For lighthouses, use {{Infobox Lighthouse}} (general lighthouse template)
- For Protected areas (National Parks/Landmarks/etc.), use {{Infobox Protected area}} (general protected area template)
- For Spanish Missions, use {{Infobox Missions}} (Spanish Missions template)
- For all churches, synagogues or other buildings with a religious purpose, use {{infobox religious building}} (has an optional section for NRHP information)
- For bridges, use {{infobox bridge}}
Generally speaking, the protected areas infobox is not congruent with the scope of this project unless the Historic Place is managed by the U.S. Government.
The following navigation box is produced by {{Registered Historic Places}}:

[edit] some but not all National Park Service photos are public domain
Some National Park Service webpages (within nps.gov domain) include photos that are NPS-owned and are public domain. But the NPS is clear that it uses, with permission, some copyrighted pictures, and those do not go into the public domain just because the NPS uses them. Some say from the "National Register Collection." Those would be okay to use. There may be different ways for them to say it, that they own the negatives, that they have ownership and put it in the public domain. The National Park Service copyright-related policy statement, at http://www.nps.gov/disclaimer.htm states, under Ownership, that "Information presented on this website, unless otherwise indicated, is considered in the public domain. It may may be distributed or copied as is permitted by the law. Not all information on this website has been created or is owned by the NPS. If you wish to use any non-NPS material, you must seek permission directly from the owning (or holding) sources. NPS shall have the unlimited right to use for any purpose, free of any charge, all information submitted to NPS via this site except those submissions made under separate legal contract. NPS shall be free to use, for any purpose, any ideas, concepts, or techniques contained in information provided to NPS through this site."(bolding added by me) So they are clear that some of the images they use are NOT public domain, but ones that are suggested to be NPS-owned are public domain.
