'''Chelmer''' is an inner-city suburb of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Chelmer is zoned as a residential area, and consists mainly of single houses (no higher density living such as units). It has many fine examples of the Queenslander-style of housing, characterised by wooden verandahs, wide stairways and roofing of galvanized iron. In recent years, solid brick homes have become the norm, owing to the suburb's high income status. Laurel Avenue is considered one of the most prestigious addresses in Brisbane by some, for the reason that large portions of the avenue are overhung by large camphor laurel trees (some over a hundred years old). It is interesting to note that these trees (despite their attractive appearance) have been declared a noxious weed by the Brisbane City Council, as their roots actively seek underground sewage pipes. The suburb is also home to Staverton Kindergarten on Twickenham Street. ==Sport== The suburb is home to both the Sherwood_Districts_Australian_Football_Club and the Western_Magpies_AFC (who compete in the Queensland_State_League) Australian_rules_football clubs. It is also a favourite among cyclists who take advantage of the wide and relatively quiet streets for training. ==Transport== The suburb is divided into east and west by QR CityTrain's Ipswich Line. Chelmer is also home to its own train station, as well as a scenic riverside park under the Walter_Taylor_Bridge. This bridge is the only non-train route directly linking Chelmer to the inner city. {{Brisbane-geo-stub}} Category:Suburbs_of_Brisbane
